Repairs to a collapsed walkway in Knaresborough are not expected to begin until summer 2027, a council report has said.

Viaduct Terrace on Waterside collapsed into the River Nidd on February 8 this year following a prolonged rainfall.

No one was harmed, but because the walkway is almost directly beneath the viaduct that carries trains between York and Harrogate services were significantly disrupted.

A petition was launched by Cllr Matt Walker, a Liberal Democrat who represents Knaresborough West on North Yorkshire Council, calling on the authority to take immediate action on the walkway to help stabilise it.

The petition, which reached its 500-signature target, is expected to be considered by Harrogate and Knaresborough area constituency committee on September 24. In total, the petition reached 1,985 signatures.

However, in a report due before councillors on the committee, the council has said work to repair the walkway is expected to start in summer 2027 and be completed in the same year.

The council added that it was in the process of awarding a contract for the reconstruction of Viaduct Terrace, which would allow for ground investigations to take place and “inform the design and the business case for the works”.

    The report said:

Subject to the approval of funding, works are expected to start in summer 2027 and be completed the same year.

Due to fish migration and spawning, works in rivers are generally undertaken between the 15 June and the 30 September.

Cllr Walker previously told the Stray Ferret that the walkway was not a welcoming sight for visitors and residents.

    He said:

It’s not very welcoming to our town as we head into peak tourist season. North Yorkshire Council needs to make sure it supports our tourism economy and local businesses who depend on it.
