A resident at Boroughbridge Manor care home celebrated her 104th birthday yesterday (June 24).

Hetty was born in 1920 and lived in Knaresborough for most of her life.

She is now cared for at Boroughbridge Manor, where she has lived for the past two years.

Residents and staff celebrated the occasion with a 'big glow disco’, including glow sticks, live music and a visit from the mayor of Boroughbridge, Pauline Phillips.

The idea for a fluorescent party stemmed from a conversation in which Hetty asked a member of staff what a glow stick was and confessed she had never held one.

Staff soon decided the theme for her 104th birthday party ought to include glow sticks.

Friends and family celebrated with her, dancing, singing, and watching her cut her cake.

Her 99-year-old sister, Mabel, who will be 100 in a matter of weeks also attended the celebrations. With a combined age of 203 the sisters were happy to be able to spend the day together.

Hetty says the secret to long life is regularly walking the grounds of Knaresborough Castle.

Leoni Senior, activity coordinator at Boroughbridge Manor, said:

Hetty couldn’t believe she was 104 years old, she kept saying ‘I can’t be 104,’ but she had a lovely day, and she was very happy her family came along. It was nice for her and her sister to celebrate together after not seeing each other for a while.
