Roadworks at one of Harrogate’s busiest junctions are due to last for a week.

Four-way temporary traffic lights are currently in place at the junction of Leadhall Lane, Hookstone Road and Leeds Road.

The work has led to considerable delays yesterday and today.

Northern Gas Networks said in a statement it was carrying out “essential work to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers” in the Leadhall area.

The gas distributor has said the lights will remain until this Sunday, July 7.

The statement said:

The ageing metal pipework is being upgraded to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area, and the work has been planned in collaboration with North Yorkshire Council.

So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some temporary traffic management has been put in place.

Mark Mawhood, operations manager, said:

We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to local residents.

We want to assure residents and road users that we are working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.

Nothern Gas Networks also told the Stray Ferret that there is a small section of pipe still to replace at the junction of Green Lane, Leadhall Lane and Church Lane.

It said:

We will be returning after the Great Yorkshire Show has taken place to complete this work (date TBC).
