Local Conservative politicians have reacted to the news that Kemi Badenoch has been named party leader.

North West Essex MP Ms Badenoch defeated Robert Jenrick in the members’ ballot by 53,806 votes to 41,388, it was announced on Saturday (November 2).

She succeeds Rishi Sunak, who represents Richmond and Northallerton in North Yorkshire.

Sir Julian Smith, the Conservative MP for Skipton and Ripon, and Sir Alec Shelbrooke, who represents Wetherby and Easingwold, both posted about the news on social media.

Sir Julian, who did not reveal who he voted for, said simply “a big task ahead”. He also paid tribute to Mr Sunak alongside a photo of the two men at Black Sheep brewery visitor centre in Masham.

He said:

It has been a real privilege to witness first hand your exceptional work ethic, intellect, core values and drive. Onward!

Sir Alec had backed James Cleverly, who never made it through to the final two. He said:

It’s time to unite our party, unite the country and defeat this Labour government.

Councillor Keane Duncan, the Conservative executive member for highways on North Yorkshire Council, posted shortly before the ballot that he was supporting Mr Jenrick “to lead our party back to victory”.

He added:

He’s displayed the energy, resolve and modern Conservative vision Britain so desperately needs.
