A long-established Harrogate restaurant that closed for refurbishment has ceased trading permanently, the Stray Ferret has been told.

Cardamom Black on Cheltenham Parade was supposed to reopen in early July, according to a notice that still features on its website, but its doors remain shut, phonecalls go unanswered, and its social media accounts were last updated in March.

Cardamom Black's website still says the restaurant is due to reopen in early July 2026.

There appears to be no refubishment work in progress at the premises.

In July, the Stray Ferret reported that the restaurant had not yet reopened, but at the time there was no further information available.

So this week we asked North Yorkshire Council if it knew anything, and a spokesperson told us:

I’ve been advised that the business is permanently closed and ceased trading in June 2026.

Cardamom Black was launched in December 2011 by restaurateur Nick Rahman, and its pan-Asian cuisine and chic decor soon saw it established as a popular fixture in the town centre.

But an Instagram update last December noted:

Since then, we've had to weather many storms – not least Brexit, the pandemic, the cost-of-living crisis. The costs of goods, labour and energy have all spiralled.

However, the post went on to announce the launch of a sister restaurant, Pitra Waterfront, in Skipton, just before Christmas.

That restaurant is still trading, and its Facebook account is still being updated.

The Stray Ferret approach the management of Cardamom Black through Pitra Waterfront, but we have not yet received any response.
