The Mother Shipton Inn in Knaresborough has appealed for support as the four-week closure of Low Bridge gets underway today.
The bridge will be closed to vehicles until July 3, although it will re-open under two-way traffic lights this weekend for the bed race, when tens of thousands of people flock to the town.
Mother Shipton Inn is located on the Calcutt side of the bridge and vehicles can still get to the pub car park from that direction. However, the road will be closed from Briggate in the opposite direction.
Pedestrian access is being maintained throughout.
The pub, which is known for its stunning display of summer hanging baskets, posted on social media today:
As you can imagine this is going to impact our business, but we will still be open seven days a week for food and drinks as usual.
We would really value everyone’s support, new customers and old alike, during the time that the road will be closed.
Low Bridge
Urgent repairs are necessary on Low Bridge to fix a buckle in the wall caused by last month’s floods.
North Yorkshire Council said in a statement the estimated cost of the work "will be in the region of £40,000".
Melisa Burnham, the council’s highways area manager, said in a statement:
Urgent repairs are being made to Low Bridge in Knaresborough after heavy rain last month made part of the structure unstable.
Scaffolding will be erected today (June 5), and the road will be closed during daylight hours, although pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.
During evenings and across the weekend until the morning of June 10, two-way traffic lights will be in operation to enable vehicles to cross the bridge.
The bridge will then be closed to traffic so stonemasons can work in a safe manner while dismantling and then rebuilding the stonework.
Advance warning signs have been installed and a fully signed diversion will be in place.
Weather permitting, work is expected to finish by July 3.
