Work to expand the existing M&S foodhall in Ripon is underway.

The Stray Ferret broke the news in June that the retailer would be expanding into the neighbouring unit.

Groundwork got underway in August but there was little discernible change until large industrial containers appeared in the car park this week.

The Stray Ferret contacted M&S for an update on the project, and whether an opening date for the expanded site had been set,

A spokesperson for M&S said the extension is set to be complete by spring 2025, but did not provide an exact date.

They said the site would be expanding by 40% from 7,300 sq ft to 12,300 sq ft, which will allow for an increased range of stock.

The spokesperson said the expansion will include an upgraded bakery, as well as a takeaway coffee station.

They added there will also be a new click-and-collect area, an improved wine, beer and spirit offering, and new checkouts.

Large industrial containers have been put up in the car park.

As part of the scheme, M&S was also granted approval to install new EV charging bays and an electricity substation.

Eight additional parent and child parking spaces, as well as two new trolley bays, will also be created.

This is the first major development at the retail park since German retailer Lidl scrapped plans to open in one of the vacant units in January.

The adjacent units have remained vacant since M&S Ripon opened in July 2020.
