New nursery near Knaresborough rated ‘good’ by Ofsted
A village nursery near Knaresborough has been rated ‘good’ by Ofsted in its first inspection.
Smartie Land Nursery & Pre-School in Brearton was praised for its “broad curriculum” in the report.
The nursery, which provides daycare for up to 62 children aged 0-9, was opened in 2022 by staff that previously ran Smarties nursery in Ripley.
The Ripley nursery closed in 2021 when plans were submitted to turn the building in which it operated into a house.
The current pre-school was set-up as a joint venture between Lesley Kelsey, who was a director at Smarties, and Viscount Mountgarret.
Government inspectors commended the rural setting and added:
Staff support children to enjoy nature and the countryside they are surrounded by. This supports children to take an interest in nature and the natural world around them.
Smartie Land's 23 staff members were praised for their approach to helping children.
The report said:
Staff plan activities and experiences carefully around each child and to build their previous knowledge. There is an effective key-person system in place which ensures that children are happy and settled.
Staff provide settling-in sessions that take account of children's individual needs.
It added that “parents are complimentary of the nursery” particularly with the progress their children make and how prepared they are for school.
One of the directors of Smartie Land Ltd, Lesley Kelsey, said:
I am very proud of the wonderful team that we have here at Smartie Land. Our team always endeavour to provide the highest level of care to each and every child at our setting, and we are absolutely delighted to be recognised for all our hard work as a Good nursery by Ofsted. We are all so lucky to have such a beautiful nursery in the most incredible location.
This is our first inspection since the registration in January 2022. Our result corroborates our intention to provide the best possible start for all children in our care, and we are so proud to have achieved this result.

The nursery also posted an update on social media, which said:
We are so excited to share that Smartie Land Day Nursery & Pre School has received a good rating in all areas in our recent Ofsted inspection.
We received some lovely comments, and we are so proud of our amazing nursery. Thank you so much to all parents that wrote recommendations and spoke to the inspector on the day, and a special thank you to our incredible staff for all the hard work they put in each and every day.
