The festoon lighting will replace the current decorative lights in trees

City councillors have unanimously supported proposals to install festoon lighting around the perimeter of Ripon Market Square, which will replace the tree lights that have been targeted by vandals.

The plan, which will be paid for out of the council's capital reserve funds, was recommended by council leader Andrew Williams at last week's full city council meeting.

He said:

The current decorative lighting in the trees around the square has been regularly vandalised and I am recommending that festoon lighting is attached to the top of lamp posts, out of the reach of the vandals.

As well as making the city centre more attractive, the new lighting, which will be in use throughout the year, will bring illumination to some areas of Market Square that are very dark in the evenings.

We have £53,000 in the capital reserve that is available for projects of this nature, and using some of that fund to pay for the festoon lighting would, I believe, be a constructive use of that money.

Councillor Barbara Brodigan agreed. She said:

I support this proposal because it will enhance both the look and the safety of Market Square.
