A new shop has opened today in Harrogate’s shopping centre.

Chaos is a shop selling ‘an eclectic mix’ of custom clothing, handmade gifts and gothic collectables.

The business is owned by Miriam Ruddy, 30, who lives in Harrogate.

She first opened an online business, Miriam’s Garden, in 2019 and Chaos is her first physical store.

It has opened opposite Grape Tree in the Victoria Centre and promises to bring “unique vibes” to the town.

It offers gifts from earrings and posters to Ouija boards and werewolf scent burners.

Ms Ruddy told the Stray Ferret:

It’s good to be here, I’m very happy and very proud of our accomplishments.

We offer a different style, Harrogate has a lot of generic shops and cafés, we needed something a bit different, we aim to bring a bit of the Whitby goth charm.

She added that 85% of her stock is handmade.

Ms Ruddy began her creative career through a design course at Harrogate College which soon progressed into photoshop, engravings and custom work.

The store offers custom printing and design services, for business and personal use, alongside its in-store products.

She said:

The shop is in a great location, it has good footfall and everyone [in the shopping centre] is great. For me it is the place to be.

There is a big gothic market here and a lot of people miss the gothic aspect you used to see at the clubs, we hope to inject this back into Harrogate.

The shop name, Chaos, derives from Greek – the origin of creation.

Ms Ruddy added:

Chaos pulled everything from herself to create most things, I thought it reflected the creativity and mixture of products we offer.

The shop is open every day except Tuesdays.
