Newby fireworks championship postponed due to fire risk
A fireworks championship at Newby Hall next weekend has been cancelled due to fire risk caused by dry conditions.
The estate between Ripon and Boroughbridge was due to host the annual event next Saturday (August 22).
It would have seen three of the UK’s leading fireworks companies compete for the title, each delivering a 10 minute display choreographed to music, with visitors voting for their favourite via text message.
The competition would then conclude with a huge finale display.
Newby Hall and Firework Champions, the company behind the event, said the “spectacular pyrotechnic display” would be “one of the most spectacular nights of the summer”.
But in a statement, they said:
Following further discussion between Firework Champions and Newby Hall, we have jointly made the difficult decision to postpone this year’s event until Saturday, 21st August 2027.
Due to the extremely dry conditions in the surrounding countryside, this has created an increased risk around a large-scale fireworks event.
They added tickets, which cost £30 for adults, would be automatically transferred to the new date.
Cooler weather and rain are forecast in the week ahead, but with wildfires affecting the country and disposable barbecues temporarily banned, organisers decided to act.
