A petition has been launched against a premises licence application for a convenience store in Starbeck.
The application, which seeks approval to sell alcohol at 35A High Street, is being advertised in the unit's window.
Applicant Tharshini Kanthasamy proposes to sell alcohol at what would be called Starbeck Convenience between midnight and 11.59pm each day.
People can comment on the application until September 19.
The plans have already generated a petition calling for the premises licence to be refused.
The Change.org petition, set up by a woman named Sarah Khanye, says Starbeck’s community is “already grappling with rampant alcohol-fuelled antisocial behaviour”, which has “pushed our neighbourhood to the brink”.
It adds if the premises licence is approved, the “round the clock” sale of alcohol would “exacerbate an already untenable situation” and create more opportunities for disruptive behaviour.
The petition, which had received 101 signatures at the time of writing, adds:
Our community simply cannot bear the burden of any additional outlets that serve alcohol.
Our goal is simple: we need to prioritize [sic] the wellbeing and safety of our community members. Allowing another alcohol shop to open, particularly one that operates 24/7, undermines this goal and disregards the voice of the people who call this neighbourhood home. We must urge the licensing board to reconsider granting this license and focus on initiatives that promote health, safety, and community harmony.

A woman named Rachael, who commented on the petition, said:
Why do we need this? There is a pub nearby and supermarkets where you can buy alcohol. This is not needed.
Ms Khanye, who launched the petition, declined to comment when approached by the Stray Ferret.
