Plans to build 250 homes in Boroughbridge were revealed this week.
Land agent Gladman Developments said it hopes to submit a planning application this summer for the homes on land east of Leeming Lane.
But the prospect of building on agricultural land has raised concerns about the scale of development around Boroughbridge, as well as eroding the green space between the town and Kirby Hill.
According to a website created by Gladman, up to 40% of the homes would be classed as affordable and the site would include public open space and recreational facilities.
The development would include allotments as well as trees and hedgerows.
Gladman says the project would create jobs and benefit nearby cafes and shops, and it would make financial contributions to compensate for the impact of development on services.
It said it will conduct a public consultation before submitting formal plans.
The Stray Ferret asked Councillor Nick Brown, a Conservative Wathvale and Bishop Monkton division on North Yorkshire Council would include the development, for his views.
He said he hadn't seen the plans yet and because he sits on the council's planning committee he was reluctant to comment on the scheme.
But he added:
I think that the Boroughbridge area has been overdeveloped over the years.
I’m concerned that there have been other developments proposed between Kirby Hill and St John’s Walk. It looks like it might become all one town. Kirby is its own village and should remain so in my opinion.
Cllr Robert Windass, a Conservative who represents Boroughbridge and Claro, made his feelings clear:
Everyone I have spoken to is utterly against it. This is good agricultural land that they’re proposing to build on.
I think it’s absolutely disgusting and could ruin the Kirby Hill community by joining them together. I know the government say we need more and more houses but at some point it has to stop.
I don’t think we need any more houses right now. There’s already a problem with parking and doctors are inundated.
The Stray Ferret will provide updates on the progress of the proposal when they become available.
