Prayers are being said at Ripon Cathedral for Pope Francis, who died this morning aged 88.
The Vatican announced this morning that the Pope, who was the first Latin American leader of the Catholic church, died at 7.35am local time.
He had been ill for some time but appeared in St Peter’s Square yesterday to wish people a happy Easter.
Ripon Cathedral said in a statement this morning:
The Dean of Ripon expressed the sorrow of the whole cathedral community on hearing of the death of Pope Francis.
The dean had referred to the recent visit of Their Majesties The King and Queen to see the Pope, seeing a sign of resurrection hope in Christian leadership that seeks to follow the example of Jesus Christ.
Prayers are being said in the cathedral for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis and for the global community of the Roman Catholic Church.
