Readers’ Letters is a free weekly column giving you the chance to have your say on issues affecting the Harrogate district. It is an opinion column and does not reflect the views of the Stray Ferret. Send your views to letters@thestrayferret.co.uk.

This reader raises concerns over the amount of litter on Grainbeck Lane in Killinghall.

Grainbeck Lane in Killinghall must be one of the worst around Harrogate for litter.

We walked along it last weekend from Ripon Road to Otley Road, and I could not believe the amount of rubbish: plastic, cans, bottles - probably enough to fill a van!

I have taken a few pictures (below) if you are interested, but it is difficult to capture the true magnitude of rubbish in a picture.

I am pleased to see people are objecting to the ‘excessively wasteful’ Station Gateway scheme

This reader shares her view on the proposed Harrogate Station Gateway project.

I am pleased to read that the residents, retailers and businesses in Harrogate are challenging North Yorkshire Council to abandon the excessively wasteful and futile Station Gateway scheme.

I hope the Get Away group, led by Steven Baines, is successful with its legal action against the council to stop this vanity project.

The funding on offer will not “enhance or improve Harrogate town centre” because none of the proposals fit that description! Station Parade itself was not in need of expensive alterations. However, it seems North Yorkshire Council is determined to spend this money at all costs to save their reputation among governmental departments.

Common sense went out of the window. Money has been wasted and spent like water trying to persuade residents and the business community to support the ideas proposed, which we did not - and still do not - support.

Cllr Keane Duncan does not seem to be able to publicly admit this scheme does not offer any real improvement to the town that justifies spending so much money.

I have made objections to the project when consultations have been offered to the public. Cllr Duncan and other council members are impervious, as it is not their livelihood or their business that will suffer.

The respective areas could all be made more attractive for a fraction of the £12.1 million - and with little disruption to traffic across that part of the town. It should have been done years ago!

Rosemary Carnaghan, Harrogate
