High Skellgate in Ripon.

A burst water main on High Skellgate on Wednesday morning has caused disruption to motorists and bus services in Ripon this week.

Locals issued a warning to motorists about flooding on the one-way road at approximately 5.40am on the Blow Your Horn Ripon group on Facebook.

Yorkshire Water attended the scene shortly after.

A spokesperson from Yorkshire Water said:

Our team attended a burst main on High Skellgate around 6am on Wednesday and were able to complete the repair that morning.

We have worked with the council to implement road closures and appropriate traffic management as a result of the burst and the subsequent damage to the road surface, as well as to ensure the safety of both our team and local road users and pedestrians.

Our teams are working as quickly as possible to reinstate the road, and we are expecting to remove the closures and traffic management on 17 September.

We understand how inconvenient road closures can be. We apologise for any impact and thank those in the area for their patience throughout.

Due to the one-way system in place around Ripon Market Place, motorists have been diverted westward along Mallorie Park Drive and back into town via Studley Road to rejoin the one-way system.

diversion

North Yorkshire Council have provided this map of the diverted route.

The 36 buses, which drive up High Skellgate when going to Ripon Bus Station, have had to divert their route between the penultimate stop at Bondgate Green and the bus station.

A spokesperson from the Harrogate Bus Company said:

Due to water works on High Skellgate in Ripon, we’re having to divert on the 36 towards Ripon. We’ll go along Bondgate Green, the A61, Rotary Way and then Allhallowgate. Journeys towards Harrogate are not affected. We won’t be missing any stops as a result of this diversion, but we apologise for any delays caused. We’re hopeful to return to our usual route from 17 September.

One of the businesses affected by the burst water main was Dark Raven Tattoo Studio which had to close for the day on Wednesday. It has confirmed to the Stray Ferret that is has reopened.
