Harrogate Magistrates Court

The Stray Ferret spent the morning at Harrogate Magistrates Court yesterday (December 19).

We sat through a full morning of hearings, which included cases of drug possession, assault and failing to report a car accident.

You can read reports on three cases below.

A Ripon man has been sentenced after admitting possessing cannabis.

Jack Milner, of Dudley Walk in the city, pleaded guilty to the charge at a hearing at Harrogate Magistrates Court yesterday.

Mel Ibbotson, prosecuting, told the court police offers were called to a property in Pateley Bridge on November 22.

Milner, 27, was arrested at the scene for a separate offence.

When searched, police found 3.5g worth of cannabis in the defendant’s trouser pocket, the court heard.

Ms Ibbotson said Milner told police the cannabis was for personal use and had a street value of around £35.

The defendant has previous drug convictions, she added.

Milner, who was not legally represented in court, disputed Ms Ibbotson’s evidence.

He told the court:

The thing you said about getting searched is not true. The officer said they could smell it and asked if I had anything on me. I passed it over straight away.

The magistrates ordered Milner to pay a total of £383 to the court. This included a £213 fine, an £85 surcharge and £85 in prosecution costs.

They also imposed a forfeit and destruction order, meaning the drugs seized will be destroyed.

Harrogate man admits assault causing actual bodily harm

A Harrogate man pleaded guilty to one charge of assault causing actual bodily harm.

Connor Francis, of Greenfields Drive, admitted to assaulting a named woman on Parliament Street in Harrogate on April 27.

Francis, 27, will be sentenced at Harrogate Magistrates Court on January 16.

Woman denies involvement in Pateley Bridge collision

A London woman denied being involved in a road accident in Pateley Bridge.

Ferhet Mohammed, of Curzon Road in Haringey, was charged with one count of [being a] driver of a vehicle fail to stop after a road accident; one count of failing to give information relating to the identification of the driver/rider of a vehicle when required, and one charge of [being a] driver of a vehicle involved in a road accident fail to report that accident.

She spoke only to confirm her name, age and address and to deny the charges.

Mel Ibbotson, prosecuting, told the court the 47-year-old defendant collided with a parked vehicle in a car park on Millfield Street on May 27.

Mr Majeed, defending, said a passenger in Ms Mohammed’s car told the defendant there "may have been a collision" between the two vehicles.

The court heard the defendant drove round the block to return to the car park to check if she had hit the car. The defendant “did not feel” a collision between the two vehicles, Mr Majeed added.

“They did not see any damage, so she did not report it to the police”, he told the court.

A trial date was set for May 1, 2025, at Harrogate Magistrates Court.
