A new talent show that aimed to give people in the Ripon the chance to showcase their talents has been cancelled due to lack of interest.
The Stray Ferret reported last month that Ripon Amplified was due to take place on August 15.
Ripon City Council planned to organise it as part of its 2026/27 events programme.
The council has allocated £69,000 of its £501,546 budget on events.
It intended to provide a professional stage with sound and lighting in the market square and the winner, chosen by a public vote, would have been invited to perform at this year’s Christmas lights switch-on on November 14.
But the council announced this week it had cancelled the event due to the dearth of entries.
City councillor Sherrie Hunt said on social media
The decision was taken to cancel the event due to a massive lack of bands/singers showing interest. We needed enough to fill an evening but barely had enough to fill an hour! It’s so sad considering how often we are told that we never have local bands performing at our events.
Cllr Andrew Williams added:
“It would have cost £7,000 for the infrastructure to stage the event and so with only one expression of interest we have decided not to risk that public money and end up with no event. We will look at other options at the next events committee and then decide how to proceed.”
