Squinting Cat to close as Greene King adopts new model
The Squinting Cat in Harrogate looks set to close as Greene King seeks to run the pub differently.
The pub, on Whinney Lane, is managed directly by Greene King, which employs the staff.
But it wants to hire tenants to run the pub, which would see current staff lose their jobs.
A spokesperson said:
We are working closely to support our team members at the Squinting Cat as a potential closure is considered. Making the decision to close a pub is never an easy one and multiple factors are always considered before a final outcome is agreed.
In the longer term, we plan to transfer the Squinting Cat to our highly successful leased and tenanted model, ensuring the venue remains a vital hub within the local community.
A consultation on the changes is underway but the brewer is already advertising for tenants.
Greene King announced a new pub estate strategy this year in which it identified about 300 pubs to operate under different models.
About half of those pubs are expected to be converted to leased and tenanted or franchise venues, with the other half evaluated for a potential sale over the medium-term.
