A community café in Harrogate will be providing free packed lunches tomorrow (February 19) to support local families.

The Joyful Brew, previously known as The Living Room, is based at the back of Starbeck Methodist Church.

The packed lunch project, which helps families during school holidays, will take place for the fifth year tomorrow.

Local businesses are supporting the venture: KD Fruiterers is providing 200 pieces of free fruit and Transdev Bus Company is donating free bus passes to families that attend.

Other than these donations, the project is entirely self-funded by the café and the church.

Sarah Khanye, manager at The Joyful Brew, said she expects around 100 people to attend, and estimates each meal will cost about £1 to make.

Anyone wanting a free packed lunch is asked to sign up in advance to help the café plan how many people they will be feeding. The sign-up form can be found here.

Sarah also appealed for donations to help make the day possible.

She said:

If you’re able to support the project, we are looking for donations of crisps, sweet treats and small bottles of juice or water — things like fruit drinks, smoothies or Capri Sun-style pouches, if you would prefer to give a monetary donation instead, we would be massively grateful.

The project will run from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Thursday, February 19 at 93b High Street, Starbeck, HG2 7LH. The offer is open to everyone and it does not require a referral.

In addition to the packed lunch project, the food bank also operates at the same time and location every Thursday morning. Anyone needing additional support is welcome to access the food bank, although a referral is required. Referrals can be obtained through most GP surgeries, schools, and Citizens Advice.
