How the store was originally planned to look.

Tesco has submitted revised plans for its supermarket in Harrogate.

The company received planning permission in February last year to build a store, petrol station and a 209-space car park at the former gas works at the junction of Skipton Road and Ripon Road.

Ground clearance work began this year, but progress has stalled since construction contractor ISG entered administration.

Nineteen new planning documents have been uploaded on to North Yorkshire Council’s website this week to vary the planning conditions. If you click here and type reference number ZC24/03462/DVCMAJ into the search function you can view them.

Tesco wants to revise the design of the supermarket and introduce new features.

It has applied to put solar panels on the roof, use timber rather than steel frames, adopt timber cladding and gather rainwater from beneath the car park adjacent to the click and collect area.

It also wants to timber-clad the petrol station and create a community garden area next to Oak Beck.

The documents say:

Since the original design and approval of the scheme, Tesco have renewed their ambitions to deliver more efficient and lower carbon builds as part of their estate which has resulted in Harrogate being reviewed and revised to address this need.

Part of this review included analysing the core materials and structure being used against potential other sustainable options.

Tesco contends that the proposed adjustments “do not substantially differ from the original approved development” and therefore it only needs to amend its original planning application rather than submit a new one.

It says: “The layout, including car park position and store location remain as previously approved. The changes primarily relate to alterations to the building fabric and external materials.”

A Tesco spokesperson told the Stray Ferret this month it was tendering for a new main contractor and still aimed to open the store next year.

They added no work beyond ground clearance, which included felling trees, was planned to start yet.

However, the retendering exercise and the new planning application raise questions over when construction work will finally get underway.

North Yorkshire Council will decide whether to approve the latest application.
