Train fares for passengers on the Harrogate line look set to rise next year.
New figures released on Wednesday (August 20) indicate that regulated rail fairs will go up by 5.8% in 2026-27 if the government chooses to follow existing policy and increase fares in line with July’s retail price index (RPI).
Ministers have yet to confirm how they will calculate rail fare increases for 2026.
However, should the government follow existing policy, it would see train fares increase again for passengers on the Harrogate line.
The current percentage rise would see an annual season ticket between Harrogate and Leeds increase from £2,116 to £2,238.
Other stations making the same journey on a season ticket could also see a rise under the current figures:
Tom Gordon, Harrogate and Knaresborough MP, called on the government to freeze rail fares.
He said:
At a time of rising cancellations and in the midst of a cost of living crisis, commuters shouldn’t be expected to fork out more and receive less. Increasing rail fares now would be nothing other than a slap in the face to ordinary people right here in Harrogate and Knaresborough.
What started out as chaos under the Conservatives has moved on to more complacency under Labour. Commuters deserve better than just the same raw deal given under new management. Raising fares is a false economy that will only drive down passengers and revenue in the long run.
