Two men sentenced for £2,100 theft from Harrogate Morrisons
Two men have been sentenced after stealing £2,100 worth of goods from Morrisons in Harrogate.
Brian Mooney, 18, and Martin Collins, 21, appeared before Harrogate Magistrates Court on Thursday (June 18) for sentencing after pleading guilty to theft at a previous hearing.
The prosecution said the pair entered the Morrisons supermarket at Hookstone Chase on January 3 this year, when a security guard saw them taking numerous items from the shelves, including perfume and toiletries.
The court heard that Mooney, who gave an address in Blackpool, and Collins, of Railway Close, Rochdale, became abusive with security when confronted at the exit.
All items were recovered following the incident, magistrates were told.
Martin Townend, defending Mooney, said the 18-year-old had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.
He added that there was “no planning” involved with the theft and that Mooney had instead been in Harrogate to meet friends.
Mr Ahmed, for Collins, said the 21-year-old had also not travelled to the area with the intention of stealing.
He added that Collins had admitted the offence at the first opportunity and planned to put the offence behind him.
Magistrates sentenced both men to a 12-month community order, which included 10 rehabilitation activity days and 60 hours of unpaid work.
