The charred remains of the two portable toilets attacked by arsonists on Saturday night.

Toilets at the Borrage Green Play Area in Ripon were burned to the ground at the weekend in an act of "wanton vandalism".

For the last four summers, Ripon City Council has provided portable toilets at the popular playground, which includes a large paddling pool, swings, slides and other equipment.

According to the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service's incident log, a Ripon crew attended the blaze at 23.24 on Saturday.

This morning, city council leader Andrew Williams, told the Stray Ferret:

We are reporting this matter to North Yorkshire Police, as this is clearly an act of wanton vandalism carried out by mindless morons who have deliberately targeted the toilets and set them alight.

There have been a number of minor attacks on the toilets since they were first installed for the summer of 2021, but nothing as serious as this and I just cannot understand the mentality of people who appear to get pleasure out of causing misery for others.

The play area remains open and Cllr Williams added:

The toilets were installed as a facility for families — particularly those with young children — who come on sunny days to enjoy the paddling pool and play equipment on site and we will endeavour to have replacements in place as soon as possible.
