Harrogate captain Will Bates steered his side to victory in the final of cricket’s Addison Cup at Follifoot last night.
Bates’ unbeaten 59 helped Harrogate overcome stubborn Scotton to lift the 102-year-old trophy for the 11th time.
He was named man of the match in the final for the second time in three years.
The Addison Cup, which is contested by the top 16 teams in the Harrogate and District Amateur Evening Cricket League, is one of the oldest cricket competitions in the world, dating back to 1922.
Electing to bat, Scotton lost a wicket off the first ball but a rapid 50 partnership in less than six overs raised hopes that the village underdogs, appearing in their first ever final, could post a competitive score.
But the innings subsided when the partnership was broken, as they went from 55-1 to 103 all out, with Sri Lankan leg spinner Ishan Abeysekara taking 4 for 22.
Tight early bowling from Scotton reduced Harrogate to 47 for 2 off 10 overs but Bates’ calm and classy knock guided them to a comfortable six-wicket win. He said:
Scotton got off to a really good start but we managed to drag it back. We were fairly happy to chase that score. It’s a very historic cup and I’m pleased to win it again.
