A woman has been airlifted to hospital with life threatening injuries after a collision near Ripon.

North Yorkshire Police said the incident happened at 8.37am this morning (May 26) on the A61 at the junction with Smith Lane, east of Hutton Bank.

The crash involved a black Land Rover Defender, driven by a woman in her 30s from the County Durham area, and a blue and white DAF HGV, driven by a man in his 60s from the Lincolnshire area.

The force said the driver of the Land Rover was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she currently remains.

    A police statement added:

Following the collision, the road was closed for a number of hours to allow for collision investigation work and recovery to take place. The road has since re-opened.

We are appealing to anybody who witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken to police, or anyone who may have dashcam footage of the collision or moments leading up to it, including either of the vehicles involved prior to the collision.

Anyone with any information should contact mark.patterson@northyorkshire.police.uk or james.lake@northyorkshire.police.uk as soon as possible. Information can also be passed via 101.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service's incident report said crews from Ripon and Harrogate "carried out an emergency extrication of the casualty trapped mechanically within the vehicle".
