Yemi and the Grand Fruits of the Sea.

Yemi Adelekan is a food writer and blogger who was a semi-finalist in the 2022 series of BBC TV’s Masterchef competition.

Yemi writes for the Stray Ferret about her love of the area’s food and shares cooking tips.

Fisk is tucked away on Montpellier Mews, a quaint street close enough to Harrogate town centre to feel handy, but quiet enough to feel like a village’s best-kept secret. It’s a restaurant that can be easily missed unless you know where you’re going or what you're looking for.

At the helm of Fisk – which is the Scandinavian word for fish – is chef patron Kanyana Williams, who has created an Asian-inspired menu worth exploring.

For starters I had the seared scallops, potatoes, truffle oil and ponzu, which turned out to be a brilliant decision. The second starter was the fish tacos, spicy sauce and wasabi, which was well presented, dainty and tasty.

Grand Fruits of the Sea

For mains, it had to be the Grand Fruits of the Sea – grilled fish in season, mussels, king prawns, whole lobster and squid. This is a signature dish and the perfect opportunity to try a bit of everything.

This made a grand entrance and came with three sauces, including tartare and sweet chilli sauce – which allowed customising of the sauces depending on what one was eating.

The Grand Fruits of the Sea is designed for two, but the platter was so generous that if following individual starters, it would easily be enough for three or even four people if they wanted to leave room for dessert.

It came with the option of two sides and we could have selected from vegetables and salads, noodles, and seven other rice and potato dishes, including seasoned diced potatoes, parmesan truffle fries, steamed jasmine rice, sea vegetables fried rice, crab nasi goreng, crab fried rice and some promising flavour bombs, such as the king prawn red curry fried rice and the pineapple king prawn fried rice.

We went for two portions of crab fried rice because it sounded too good not to try – and I didn’t regret my order. It was my first time eating crab fried rice and I will be ordering it again.

The "sensational" seared scallops, potatoes, truffle oil and ponzu.

I went with a seafood lover and I have to say, Fisk did not disappoint us.

My favourite was the starter of seared scallops, potatoes, truffle oil and ponzu. This was sensational and utterly delicious with the super soft scallops that were delicately like butter on the tongue.

In fact, the cookery of the scallops was right up there with many I have eaten in fine dining establishments.

We left stuffed, with no room for desserts – so I will be back to try those another time.

"I'll be back" – Yemi didn't have room for dessert.

A seafood restaurant comes with high expectations since that’s their speciality, so yes, I was looking to be blown away, and I was – for the most part.

For drinks, I ordered green sencha tea expecting it to come in teapots, but it came in a mug with no refills or additional hot water which was a bit of a let-down as it felt no different from a friend making a tea with minimal fuss or effort. My request for honey and lemon was met, which was good. Having hot teas delivered in Asian-themed teapots would enhance the dining experience.

I would have loved the lobster to be more tender, with perhaps a knob of spiced butter once it’s cooked to help lock in some moisture.

Every other element was sublime. I have since recommended Fisk to others, and I will be back very soon. The potato and scallop starter and crab fried rice are still haunting me in the loveliest way possible.

Price-wise, I felt it was great value for money. The waiting staff were attentive and dishes came out quickly.

There is a wide and excellent selection for alcohol drinkers including 14 cocktails, dessert wines, spirits, rosé, red and white wines.

Disappointingly, there isn’t as much of an offering for non-drinkers, with only two mocktails to choose from – a Paloma (grapefruit and lime juice) or a Spiced Mule (apple, lime juice and spice). Hot drinks and cold soft drinks are also available, so non-drinkers will still find a drink to go with their meal.

Overall, Fisk delivers a memorable seafood experience with standout flavours, generous portions and thoughtful cooking that easily outweigh its small shortcomings.

From the sensational scallops to the impactful crab fried rice, it is a confident, flavour-driven seafood restaurant deserving of a place in Harrogate’s list of compelling restaurants, and it’s well worth seeking out.
