Up to 1,000 runners set to take part in Harrogate 10K1,000 runners take part in events in Harrogate and RiponLightwater Valley 10K to raise vital funds for local school

The Lightwater Valley 10K race is set to raise vital funds again for North Stainley Primary School.

The event, on March 5, was first held in 2010 and is organised by the Friends of North Stainley School.

All money raised through entry-fees or donations will be put towards learning equipment and improvement of facilities to support the school and its pupils.

The run typically brings in around three and a half thousand pounds – almost half of the funds raised for the school each year.

The organisers say that the event is suitable for all abilities. It is set on well-marshalled roads with picturesque scenery.

The entry limit is 500 runners, with 348 places remaining.

Runners will have access to on-course refreshments as well as free food and drink at the end of the race. There will be food for visitors to buy at race HQ.

For the race-marshals and other administrative roles, the Friends of North Stainley School rely on volunteers, whilst food and drink is provided by local supporting companies.

This does not mean the race is not a serious competition. It is registered with UK Athletics and the course is officially measured by the association of UK course measurers.

Describing the route, Mike Greathead, treasurer of the Friends of North Stainley School, said:

“The run starts in the grounds of Lightwater Valley Family Adventure Park and heads out along quiet country roads. The bulk of the route consists of 3 peaks – this has been nick-named “The W” by some of our regular participants and provides a great challenge for seasoned runners whilst still being achievable for the less experienced.
“We also have a 3k fun run which we encourage local children to take part in from 7-16 years, it is a great opportunity to encourage younger runners and we award various medals and prizes on the day.”

Ripon’s 10k Muddy Boots race returns after two years

Ripon’s annual Muddy Boots 10k and Fun Run returned at the weekend after being cancelled for the past two years.

The run raises funds for St Wilfrid’s Primary School in Ripon. The two races take runners over a multi-terrain course finishing at the primary school.

Held this past weekend, the event saw almost 350 runners turn up for the mud run and a further 83 for the fun run.

The run had been cancelled in 2019 and 2020 due to bad weather and coronavirus but parent volunteers from the St Wilfrid’s Association wanted to make sure they didn’t miss another year.

Race director, Yvonne Parkes, said:

“It’s great that we can host the Muddy Boots 10k and Fun Run again after a two-year hiatus.

“Muddy Boots is a well-established feature of the local running calendar and a great community event that raises much needed funds to offer children who attend St Wilfrid’s Primary school a full range of activities, including extra-curricular opportunities.”

North Stainley school’s fundraising 10K race to return next month

After two year’s off because of covid restrictions, a major fundraising race day is back on track.

The Lightwater Valley 10K and 3K Challenges, organised by Friends of North Stainley School (FONSS), will take place on Saturday March 12.

With the number of runners limited to 500, would-be entrants are being asked to book their place as soon as possible.

Places can be purchased in advance from Race Best on https://racebest.com/races/g4zhe The fee is £15 for affiliated and £17 for unaffiliated runners.

The event, covering an undulating multi-terrain route that passes through the Lightwater estate and into the surrounding countryside, will raise much-needed funds for the village school.

North Stainley Primary School opened in 1871 and is still based in its original building, close to the village church of St Mary’s.

The FONSS are the fundraising arm and use funds to contribute towards school trips, technology for pupils, music lessons and sporting activities.

Headteacher Louise Wallen, said:

“We are delighted to have the race up and running after what has been a challenging couple of years when we have been largely unable to fundraise.”

“It’s a fabulous community project, and a great day out for all the family.”
