Sneak Peek: Cheese, wine and charcuterie bar opens today in HarrogateA new cheese, wine and charcuterie bar will open on King’s Road in Harrogate today.
The aptly-named Barcuterie is the latest project by Cold Bath Brewing Co, which operates a pub and brewery opposite Harrogate Convention Centre.
Barcuterie is situated in Cold Bath Clubhouse next door to the brewery and is described by the owners as a “space for flavour experimentation as well as showcasing artisanal food and drink”.
As well as local cheeses, fine wines and meat dishes, the menu will include barrel-aged cocktails and, of course, craft beer from the brewery next door.

As the name suggests, the brewery was originally set up on Harrogate’s Cold Bath Road before moving to King’s Road.
Jim Mossman, Cold Bath Brewing Co founder described the venue as “a space with enormous potential for a life and identity all of its own and brings another dimension to the Cold Bath experience”.
He said the company had worked with “some wonderful people in a series of pop-ups”, adding:
“Now we feel it is time to really reclaim the space as our own. With that, the concept of The Barcuterie was born.”

Recently, the clubhouse was home to Paradise Tap n’ Taco which closed after 16 months of residency.
Mr Mossman added:
“Our Barcuterie is a showcase of independent, hand crafted food, drinks and products of our own and from around the country.”

The bar is due to open tonight from 4pm to 10pm and will then open on Wednesday and Thursday from 4pm-10pm, on Friday from 4pm-11.30pm, on Saturday from 12pm-11.30pm and on Sunday from 12pm-8pm.
Harrogate Tap and Taco bar closes pop-up with sights set on permanent homeParadise Tap and Taco Bar is to close — but the owners have said they are determined to find a permanent home for the pop-up shop in Harrogate.
The Mexican-themed bar initially opened as a three-month pop-up next door to Cold Bath Brewery Co in October 2020. It has survived 16 months but the tenancy is now coming to an end.
Co-owners Ellie Stott and Josh Molloy said Paradise would now go “on tour” as they hatched plans for kitchen pop-ups over the coming months. Paradise is taking over Rooster’s kitchen from Tuesdays to Thursdays until easter.
Ms Stott said:
“After 10 years each in hospitality we’ve made the bar we would want to drink in and I think that’s why we love it here so much. It was a bit of weird timing but we’ve learnt so much doing it through this period, we’re just winging it everyday but it’s going well so far.”

The bar’s current home on King’s Road.
End of a “golden era”
The Harrogate-born entrepreneurs said the pop-up was a “golden era” for them but they are now focusing on finding a permanent home in the town.
The pair say they hope to open a new venue by summer and will spend the time until then developing their menu and hosting pop-ups. Ms Stott said:
“We’re going for a big, long lease, 10 years ideally. We definitely will open this year, ideally summer, it’s just finding the right space. We have regulars that have become friends.”

The bar serves a variety of Mexican foods such as tacos, burritos and enchiladas as well as craft beers and spirits.
Ms Stott added:
“This is just the beginning. It’s been a really good way to see if this plan works, and it really does. People do like what we’re doing, it can be really overwhelming hearing people’s compliments.”
The bar will close for good on Sunday, February 6 and will hold a closing party the night before.
‘Sneak peek’: Harrogate’s new Manhattan-style cocktail barHarrogate’s answer to a Manhattan cocktail bar will open it’s doors on Friday, with the launch of 63rd+1st.
Decked out in trendy dark blue and gold, and featuring lots of greenery, the restaurant, lounge and bar on Albert Street is aimed at customers who might just want a nibble and a drink after work or a meal out with friends.

The restaurant area.
The extensive selection of cocktails, priced at around £10, include the likes of a New York Hangover and a Fuhgeddaboudit, as well as a more traditional selection. There is also a good choice of low alcohol or alcohol-free options.
With plenty of other restaurants in the area, as well as bars on nearby John Street, the venue will need to stand out from the crowd.
And general manager Eva Souza, from Harrogate, who has been in the hospitality industry for 15 years, believes it will.
She said:
“The location is really great in the town centre. I believe we are the right cocktail bar and restaurant for this particular place.
“People love to go out here and enjoy nice surroundings and I believe this is the right place for Harrogate people.
“There are a lot of Italian restaurants in this area and this is something unique. I believe it is something new for the town.
“Our bartenders are really well-trained and the bar itself is beautiful. You can sit around it and watch them prepare the cocktails.
“It’s like a home away from home and we want to be a nice, cosy place for everyone. The place is very stylish and I hope guests will be very happy here.”

The new 3,380 sq ft venue, which was formerly Ask Italian, seats 101, as well as another 12 outside.
The menu is inspired by Manhattan street food and features small plates to enjoy with a cocktail, as well as larger dishes.
It includes a ‘signature burger’ steaks and seafood, as well as savoury donuts, a crayfish roll and a corndog. Small plates include arancini and calamari.
Head chef Nick Chappelow, who is also from Harrogate, said:
“I’m excited to cook all of it. The menu is great.
“I like the fact that there are sharing plates on the menu. It’s more relaxed and you get to just graze, so it’s somewhere in between tapas and a main meal starter size.
“The jammy chicken lollipops are insane.
“There’s a really good team here. I’ve been a head chef for 20 plus years, so I’ve seen a lot and it’s nice to go into this going forward.
“It’s fresh and funky and we are going to hit the ground running.”

The venue, which will generate 30 part-time and full-time jobs, is being developed by Hostmore PLC, which also includes TGI Fridays as part of its portfolio. It is named after the street in New York that was home to the original TGI Fridays and where Tom Cruise filmed Cocktail.
Harrogate’s branch is the third to open in the UK behind Surrey in May and Glasgow in September.
- 63rd and 1st opens on Friday, November 26, at 9am.
Plans have been submitted to convert the former Moss Bros menswear shop on Parliament Street in Harrogate into a new bar.
Jonathan Neil from Palagander Ltd has submitted an application to Harrogate Borough Council to convert 23 Parliament Street, which also meets the top of The Ginnel, into a nightspot.
The company already runs two venues in Leeds. A cocktail bar called Roland’s on Call Lane and live music venue The Domino Club.
The new bar would be the latest addition to Parliament Street’s nightlife scene which is home to many venues including the Harrogate Arms, Revolución de Cuba, Mojos and the Viper Rooms.
The Ginnel hosts bars Montey’s and Major Tom’s Social.
Some venues on Parliament Street have struggled to survive in recent years including Jamie’s Italian, Wagyu Bar & Grill and The Restaurant Bar and Grill, which all closed.
The Stray Ferret tried to contact Mr Neil to find out more about his plans but we had not received a response by the time of publication.

‘Sneak peek’ at new bar and pizzeria in Harrogate
Hidden bar and pizzeria will take the place of Porco Rosso in The Ginnel when it opens its doors for the first time tomorrow.
The bar will only stock drinks from Yorkshire companies and the kitchen will serve hand-stretched, stone-baked pizzas.
It has been a tough year for the hospitality industry so the owners of Hidden have made a bold move opening now.
Tier two restrictions, which began yesterday, forced many wet bars to stay closed but Hidden is among those permitted to open because it serves ‘substantial’ meals.

Hidden co-owner Jay Rennard said:
“I have always wanted to have a bar or a restaurant. This is both: very boutique, niche and classy. It brings a different vibe to Harrogate, very laid back and casual.
“I hope that people understand that we are trying to do something different. Something you don’t get in chains, a more unique and bespoke approach.”
Louise Robertson-Rennard, who is a joint business partner at Hidden, added:
“It has been a crying shame seeing businesses fold. We think people need hope so we are going to make the experience as normal as possible.
“I think that the hospitality industry has been through enough this year.”

Wedding venue transforms into ski lodge to save staffA luxury Harrogate wedding venue is transforming into a ski lodge restaurant to keep staff in work this winter.
Current covid restrictions limit weddings to a maximum of 15 guests.
This has had a huge impact on venues like Wharfedale Grange, near Harewood, which is able to seat 270 wedding guests and can cater for 165 people in its restaurant.
It hopes that by adapting the use of its barn it will be able to retain staff, especially with the furlough scheme ending this month.
Claire Thomas, managing director of Wharfedale Grange, said:
“We’ve got 18 full-time staff and 12 part-time staff so we’re effectively keeping 30 people in work by converting to a restaurant and not making them redundant.”
Described as ‘La Folie Douce meets Yorkshire’, the restaurant — called Apres Bar & Grill — will incorporate elements of ski lodge resorts.
It is due to open from November 1 to the end of March.

Harrogate restaurant reopens in time for Yorkshire Day
A Harrogate restaurant will be celebrating both its reopening and Yorkshire Day with a make-shift beach this Saturday.
To mark its namesake’s day on August 1, as well as the re-launch of its Scran restaurant, The Yorkshire Hotel has created a beach at the front of the building and is offering a free glass of prosecco for those ordering food.
Its sister property, the White Hart Hotel and Fat Badger pub, installed an outdoor beach earlier this month to celebrate hospitality venues being allowed to reopen. Simon Cotton, managing director of HRH Group, said:
“Since we opened two years ago, Scran has been at the heart of Harrogate’s dining and bar scene, but with our new fresh, contemporary look, we are excited to bring a new concept to our loyal and new customers.”

The restaurant’s food will be in the hands of head chef Dean Sowden of the former Deano’s, with Harrogate’s barman of the year, Dario Silviera, managing the bar.
Simon added:
“Dean’s food has such a good local reputation that we are delighted he is heading up the kitchen of Scran, and with head barman, Dario at the cocktail helm we have the dream team!”
Screens have been placed around the bar and more space has been created between tables to allow for social distancing. It is recommended that customers pre book.
