Boroughbridge Junior FC holds taster day for new players

Players old and new are invited to sign up for the coming football season and ‘try before they join’ when Boroughbridge Junior FC holds its annual registration and taster event on Saturday.

Players of all abilities are welcome to come down to the event at Boroughbridge High School on Wetherby Road, starting at 10am and running to 12pm.

The club will be running boys and girls teams from under-8 to under-16 age groups, plus a pan-disability football for boys and girls aged seven to 18. The 2023-24 season starts on September 2.

Players will be able to take part in supervised games run by FA-qualified coaches, with club officials on hand to answer any questions.

Club secretary Nigel Charlesworth said:

“The club motto is ‘football for all’, so we encourage players of all abilities to come along.

“If your son or daughter already plays for the club, then come down and register for the new season and let them blow some steam off by playing supervised games. New players are also welcome. So, come down, try us out, meet the coaches and make new friends through football. Use this as a taster session. If you like what you see, then join us for the new season.”

Teams will be joining leagues covering Harrogate and District and the Hambleton and Richmondshire area.

Volunteers and helpers are always welcome. The club provides practical and financial support to attain qualifications and meet FA requirements.

Boroughbridge girls savour day to remember at Euro 2022 final

A gamble that the England would get to the final of Euro 22 paid off on Sunday for 70 members of Boroughbridge Juniors Football Club.

Chris Fahy, the club’s chairman and coach, wanted his girls teams to see top level football.

So a year ago he applied for tickets to the Euro 2022 final — and it paid off as they got to see the Lionesses beat Germany 2-1.

He said:

“Seventy from the club went to Wembley for the final, including girls and parents.

“I applied for tickets a year ago. I gambled that England were going to get to the final. Luckily it paid off! Even if it didn’t, I wanted the girls to see top level football.

“It was absolutely fantastic. The atmosphere is different from men’s football – it’s more family orientated. You feel there’s going to be no trouble, no danger, at the women’s game.”

Mr Fahy said the girls had an amazing time at the game, which saw the Lionesses clinch victory in extra time.

He said:

“The girls loved it. We were all really excited going down. We had a fantastic view – we were behind the goal where England scored twice.

“We stayed until the celebrations were more or less finished, about half an hour afterwards.”

The club is holding free taster sessions throughout August for girls aged five to 15, with the first session at Boroughbridge Football Club, on Aldborough Road, starting at 10.15am this Saturday, August 6.

Boroughbridge all abilities team mid game

The club’s ability for all team are encouraged to enjoy the game regardless of disability.

“We’re currently looking to build our girls and disabled teams. For the girls teams we need girls aged 7-13 years to join and train with us. In time they could join our competing teams in the Harrogate League. If they don’t think they are ready for the league they can just come along and then train for fun.

“Our all abilities team usually trains together. The children have various disabilities and are all aged between 6-15 years. We tell everyone to just come down to train and we will support them.
