£630,000 resurfacing of Ripon Market Square roads set to be approvedHistoric Hampsthwaite village celebration set for return

It was first established by Royal Charter in 1304 and has been enjoyed by villagers ever since.

Now, following a two-year break due to the pandemic, the Hampsthwaite Feast and show is returning this weekend.

This year the event, which is organised by volunteers for residents in the village, will start on Friday evening, kicking off with children’s races.

Saturday will include a pet show and a new and improved Hampsthwaite Run, which has been opened up to competitors from outside the village.

The Hampsthwaite Feast Show will take place in the memorial hall and the traditional feast fancy dress parade is also back, accompanied by Tewit Youth Band. This year’s theme is ‘Children’s TV – past and present’.

The event, which is aimed at emphasising the village’s “wonderful community spirit”, will finish with fireworks on Saturday night.

Feast secretary Vicki Dixon said:

“We are really thrilled it’s coming back this year. Last year we had a smaller event, but we weren’t able to do more than that. So we are really looking forward to celebrating as a village again.”

Amazing aerial photos of Harrogate, Ripon and Knaresborough from 100 years ago

Amazing photos taken above Harrogate district skies during the first half of the 20th century have been published by Historic England.

The public body this week opened up an archive of over 400,000 shots capturing Harrogate, Knaresborough and Ripon during a bygone era.

The photos were taken by a company called Aerofilms, which was a pioneering firm of commercial aerial photographers formed in 1919. It combined the fledgling technologies of flight and photography.

We’ve included some of the best photos below but if you visit Historic England’s website and type in a location you will be able to view more from its archive.

The photographers also captured villages such as Pannal during the 1940s when it looked much smaller than the present day.

Famous North Yorkshire pub ‘reduced to ashes’ in overnight blaze

A North Yorkshire pub famous for its food and setting in a historic thatched inn has been “reduced to ashes” in a fire which took hold overnight.

The owners of the Star Inn at Harome, which will be well-known to food lovers in the Harrogate district, called the fire service at around 10pm last night.

Firefighters battled the blaze overnight with nine fire engines on scene at its peak. As of 7am this morning, crews were still working to extinguish the fire.

In a dramatic video posted by the pub’s owners on social media just after 4am the thatched roof can be seen ablaze with smoke billowing out into the night sky. They said:

“It’s been a long night so far…I’m afraid we won’t be open for a while as we are reduced to ashes with The Star on fire and still burning, residents please call after 9 am.”

The Star Inn is famous for its food, having held a Michelin star for much of chef Andrew Pern’s tenure who has been at the pub for 25 years.

Fire crews from Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside and Pickering along with the aerial ladder platform from Huntington have attended the fire.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said at 7am:

“At it’s peak the incident had nine appliances, one aerial ladder platform, one water bowser, one welfare unit and an incident command unit in attendance.

“Crews worked with main jets and hose reel jets to contain the fire and the aerial ladder platform was deployed to removed thatch from the roof.

“The incident is still ongoing and crews are still working to extinguish the fire.”
