Northern launches £1 Harrogate line train tickets in flash sale

Train operator Northern has announced a flash sale of £1 tickets from Harrogate and Knaresborough to Leeds and York.

Five million tickets are on sale and people have until 4pm tomorrow (January 5) to purchase.

The tickets are valid for travel between Wednesday, January 10, and Friday, March 1, 2024 ,and must be booked at least seven days in advance of travel.

Mark Powles, commercial and customer director at Northern, said:

“The ‘Flash Sale’ extends to every corner of our network, with £1 tickets up for grabs for both local and longer, cross-country journeys.

“We hope the ‘Flash Sale’ will inspire people to get out and about across the region, for those moments that matter most – days out with the family, catch-ups with friends or for no reason other than to enjoy the beautiful countryside and coastlines our region has to offer.

“As always, customers should book early to avoid disappointment. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.”

People can buy the tickets online, on Northern’s website or its app.

Destinations along the Leeds line eligible for the discount are:

Bradford Forster Square, Carlisle, Chester, Doncaster, Halifax, Harrogate, Huddersfield, Ilkley, Knaresborough, Knottingley, Lancaster, Manchester Victoria, Morecambe, Nottingham, Selby, Sheffield, Skipton and York.

132-year-old Knaresborough station canopy restored

The 132-year-old canopy at Knaresborough station has been restored and given a new lease of life.

The canopy at the main entrance, which had been reinforced by scaffolding to protect passengers, has been repaired following work by Network Rail.

The Grade II listed structure has seen a complete roof renewal and redecoration throughout, including a fresh lick of paint in its traditional white and green colours

Robert Ellams, route engineer for Network Rail’s north and east route, said: 

“The revamped entrance has made a real difference to the station, giving it a vital upgrade whilst retaining its historic look. The crucial repair work will not only improve passenger experience, but it will also help to protect the Grade II listed building for future generations.

“I’d like to thank passengers, our partners and the community for their patience and hope they continue to enjoy the station’s connections to York, Harrogate and Leeds for years to come.”

With the refurbishment now complete, the structure matches the platform canopies which were also restored back in 2016.

The move to restore the canopy follows a £150,000 upgrade to the station roof back in 2019.

Andrew Jones, Member of Parliament for Harrogate and Knaresborough, said: 

“This is great work from Network Rail and is part of a greater programme of investment in our stations and railways. It is also an investment in our heritage as this is a Grade II listed structure

“The Network Rail team were really responsive when the Friends of Knaresborough Station approached me wanting the work completed quickly. They prioritised it and now we have a fantastic looking station with brilliant businesses on the platform to go with more and better rail services.”

Rail strike: 10% of Harrogate and Knaresborough trains to run today

Rail services in Harrogate and Knaresborough will be severely affected by a second day of strike action today.

Only about 10% of services are expected to operate on the line between York and Leeds.

Rail operator Northern is expected to be among the worst affected by today’s industrial action by the RMT union.

A third strike is expected on Saturday.

People hoping to travel by train to the first day of the England vs New Zealand Test match at Headingley will be among those affected.

Harrogate station has been largely deserted for the last two days.

Many services ran yesterday but passengers had heeded warnings not to travel.

Rail campaigner Brian Dunsby, of the Harrogate Line Supporters Group, said:

“We are very concerned that this unnecessary national rail strike will risk driving people away from rail and thereby undermine and set back rail’s steady recovery from the pandemic.

“We express deep regret and concern given the uncertainty the industry and its consumers face following the effects of covid on passenger numbers.

“We ask management and government to get talking to the unions resolve things and for everyone to avoid further aggravating tensions by making hostile or critical comments. We urge the union to be more considerate of the impact on passengers of all categories.”

A statement by Northern said:

“Customer safety is our priority, we advise you not to travel between Tuesday 21 and Sunday 26 June and make alternative plans.

“There will be no replacement buses or alternative travel provided.”
