All designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England and Wales, including Nidderdale, have been rebranded National Landscapes from today.
The new name aims to create greater understanding and awareness of the sites’ environmental importance in combating issues such as climate change.
There are 46 AONBs in the UK, covering 14% of England, Wales and Northern Ireland including moorland, farmland, coast, forests and International Dark Sky Reserves. The first to be designated an AONB was the Gower Peninsula in 1956; the most recent, in 1995, was the Tamar Valley, which spans Devon and Cornwall.
All are now known as National Landscapes.
Iain Mann, lead officer for Nidderdale National Landscape, said:
“Nidderdale’s landscape is treasured by those who live here and the many people who come to visit.
“Next year will mark 30 years since our partnership came together to conserve and enhance this special place. We look forward to continuing to work with the wide range of partners, from farmers and landowners to volunteers and conservation organisations, as we jointly face up to challenges such as climate change and nature recovery.
“Our new name reflects the national importance of this work and, we hope, sends a welcoming message to people who don’t yet know us to come and visit.”

“For decades the AONBs have helped protect the beauty of our finest landscapes. Today though we need so much more from these wonderful places, helping us adapt to climate change, catching carbon, restoring depleted wildlife and encouraging more people outside, at the same time as producing food, sustaining local communities and enhancing historic environments.
“Modern challenges require new approaches and today marks the beginning of a new phase for our National Landscapes.”

Government rejects yurts plan for Kirkby Malzeard
The government has refused plans to build three yurts in Kirkby Malzeard.
The proposal would have seen the yurts created on Back Lane North, to the west of Pipistrelle Barn, in a field previously used for grazing sheep.
The application was submitted by Frederick Atkinson to create the yurts, each on raised decking and with its own hot tub along with a ‘services area’ of toilet, sink and shower in a wooden hut.
Harrogate Borough Council turned down the proposal in September.
The authority said the plan would have “an adverse impact upon the character and appearance of the Nidderdale Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty”.

Mr Atkinson argued that the plan would help to create a “peaceful, low impact and eco-friendly retreat” and took the decision to the Planning Inspectorate.
But Adrian Caines, a government planning inspector, rejected the challenge.
He said the plan would give rise to “significant conflict” with the council’s development plan, in particular the area of outstanding natural beauty.

Asylum seekers from countries including Iran and Syria have been taking part in a conservation project in the Harrogate district.
The participants have no right to work in the UK while their asylum claims are assessed so they undertook volunteering at Nether Timble Farm, Swinsty to get exercise and regain a sense of purpose.
Those taking part are skilled workers, such as software programmers, digger drivers, electricians and farmers, in their own countries.
Abdul Aziz, Hysni Latif, Ali Reza, Imran and Salih from Syria, Iran, Turkey and Sudan took part in coppicing work at the farm with Josh and Rowan from Leeds Coppice Workers.
Coppicing is a traditional method of woodland rejuvenation that is both productive and good for nature. The group worked hard creating a number of coppice products, including stakes and weaving rods for hedge-laying and bean poles for the garden.
The scheme is part of Nidderdale AONB’s farming in protected landscapes funded project. It is the first of six outings planned to take place throughout the next year. Future visits will offer opportunities to take part in hedge-laying, dry-stone walling, as well as visits to working farms.

“Being outdoors is proven to boost mental and physical well-being, and the group really appreciated the day out in the AONB, which despite being a rather grey day in November saw the sun peek out from behind the clouds — the landscape looked its moody best!”

Farmers and landowners are being offered free advice and grants to help boost woodland creation in Nidderdale.
A partnership between the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and Skell Valley Project Team aims to create new areas of woodland this winter.
Anyone with a small area of land – just over an acre or less – can access grants covering 100% of the planting costs.
Alice Crosby, woodland creation project officer at Nidderdale AONB, said:
“It might be a field corner, a shelterbelt or something bigger, it is more about making trees work for you and your farm.
“Grants can be tailored and could include new fencing, gates, buying and planting trees, tree protection, and money for ten years of maintenance, to ensure that your new woodland gets off to the best start.”
Funds are available to people living in the Skell Valley catchment area for projects this winter. The AONB is also keen to speak to people in other parts of the district who might be interested in planting next winter and beyond.
More than 400 farmers live in Nidderdale AONB, which covers more than half of the Harrogate district.
Currently 8% of the AONB is woodland, including 1,245 hectares of ancient woodland. An area of 1,872 ha is planted conifer woodland, 187 ha is mixed woodland and 2,527 ha is broadleaf.
Ms Crosby said:
“As landowners will know, trees can help improve soil health, boost animal welfare, manage water flow, cut pollution and improve energy efficiency. They are also a lifeline for wildlife.”
She added:
“It’s important to increase the number of trees planted in the AONB, but we want to emphasise quality planting, as 50% of the land in the AONB is not suitable for woodland creation. We can help identify priority areas for future planting sites, as well as help safeguard ancient woodland and other special habitats.
“It’s counter-intuitive but trees can have a negative impact on wildlife if they aren’t planted in the right spot. For some species, like wading birds and adders, woodland can be damaging. So, it is important to get advice.”

Fencing company in two-year sponsorship deal with football team
A Harrogate fencing company has signed a two-year sponsorship deal with a local junior football club.
Adam Healy at Harrogate Premier Fencing has provided a new team strip and training tops for Pannal Ash Whites Under 12s, who play in the Garforth junior league.
Andy Pears, from the club, said:
“We have 15 boys signed up for this season. We have won all our games, and are unbeaten in the league, currently into round three of the Leeds & District cup – we got to the final last year.
“We are also in the West Riding County Cup and are into the divisional league cup third round. So overall a really successful start to the new season.”
The team is set to move to the new training facilities at St Aidan’s on a Tuesday night after half term. The boys also play on a Sunday morning at the Pannal Ash Juniors club at Almsford Playing Field, next to Oatlands Junior School.
Campaign launched to achieve bathing water status on River NiddOrganisations have agreed to work together to achieve designated bathing water status on the River Nidd at Knaresborough.
Longstanding concerns about water quality were heightened in summer when people and dogs fell ill after entering the Nidd.
If the bathing water bid is successful, the Environment Agency would be obliged to put plans in place to monitor and protect the water.
Not a single waterway in North Yorkshire currently has bathing water status but the River Wharfe in Ilkley has achieved it.
Knaresborough has been chosen because of the amount of recreational river users it attracts, but if the campaign succeeds the rest of the Nidd would also benefit from the measures introduced.
Anglers, the Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water, Nidderdale AONB, Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust, Leeds University, councillors and Andrew Jones, the Conservative MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, are among those involved after a meeting this month.
They must demonstrate the river attracts a large number of bathers and has support for such a move. Landowners must also support applications for privately owned sites.

Shan Oakes, a Green Party councillor in Knaresborough chairing the group, said the government was not setting high enough water quality standards and action was necessary. Ms Oakes, who is also on Knaresborough Town Council, added:
“It’s not going to be a quick fix. We need to consult with a lot of groups.”

Last week Hannah Gostlow, a Liberal Democrat who represents Knaresborough East on North Yorkshire County Council, agreed to chair a cross-party sub-group of the council’s Harrogate and Knaresborough area constituency committee that will examine the issue. She said:
“We are well placed to achieve this but we need the support of the community and the town council.”
Knaresborough lido, which is particularly popular with recreational river users, will probably be the focus of the campaign. Cllr Gostlow said:
“The river plays a big part in the local economy but people are getting ill so we need to do something.”
She added she hoped the campaign might succeed by summer 2024.
Action by anglers
The Nidd Catchment Angling Group held a meeting in August to discuss concerns about the Nidd near Darley sewage treatment works.
A further meeting on October 3 was held to address wider concerns about the river.
David Clayden, honorary secretary of Harrogate Fly Fishers’ Club, said:
“We’ve broadened and deepened our membership, and are pursuing a number of shared objectives.
“I am the lead for the improved monitoring and analysis of the Nidd’s water, while Shan Oakes, of Knaresborough Town Council, is leading on the bid to get Knaresborough established as a safe bathing water location.
“We also have established a strong link with staff and postgraduate students from the University of Leeds, through James McKay, who will help us with research studies about quality of the Nidd catchment’s water course, and the efforts by local people to maintain and improve them.
“We are all agreed of the importance of Knaresborough achieving this designation, and are working together to achieve this.”
Mr Jones raised the matter in Parliament this week when he called for a debate on how to establish more designated bathing areas on rivers, However, he did not respond to questions by the Stray Ferret on the Nidd campaign.
The owner of a Nidderdale campsite has called for more regulation of “pop-up campsites” which she claims are impacting established businesses.
Louise Pullan co-owns the Breaks Fold Farm camping and glamping site in the Washburn Valley, next to Thruscross Reservoir, in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
She said the pop-up campsite trend was having a big impact on established sites and needed regulating by local authorities.
A change in regulations to allow landowners to establish pop-up campsites for up to 56 days was introduced in July 2020, to help the rural economy recover from the covid pandemic.
Previously, they were able to operate for only 28 days a year without applying for planning permission.
This 28-day rule is now back in place.
Ms Pullan said:
“It should be being enforced by local authorities, as many are operating well over and above this. It is time for the rules to stop being bent to suit now.”
A spokesman for Harrogate Borough Council said:
“Should anyone believe an area of land is being used as a campsite for more than the allocated number of days per year they are advised to get in touch with us by emailing planningenforcement@harrogate.gov.uk.”
Ms Pullan said outdoor accommodation search and booking platform Pitchup.com had a lot to answer for in relation to the issue.
Encouraging people to support the #bookdirect movement, which encourages customers to book direct with businesses to avoid fees, she said:
“People are setting up sites thinking they can make a massive profit. They are encouraging this trend of unregulated sites and pushing for the 56-day rule to be made permanent.
“We feel these sites are a risk to public health, in the same way an unregulated food business is, and they are ruining places like the national parks and AONB areas.
“If people want to support small accommodation businesses book direct, not through booking agents. They should support their favourite established sites to help them get through and recover from the impact of covid, when we only had a very limited window to open our businesses.”
She said that she was grateful to her client base for their continued support, but added:
“At the moment it is a fight to keep going, especially after we lost a huge part of our business in the form of our bistro Flock to the Fold. But everyday we feel lucky to still be here, because many haven’t made it through.”

Pitchup.com founder and managing director Dan Yates said booking platform currently lists more than 3,100 sites and aims to be the most “comprehensive and user-friendly” online resource for outdoor accommodation in the UK.
He said that as a result, it includes detailed listings for sites that take bookings through the platform, as well as basic listings for sites that don’t.
He said:

“Although camping searches in the UK for 2022 are slightly down (-6 per cent) on the record volumes of 2021, double the number of Pitchup bookings by Brits have been made compared to 2019, equating to 720,000 additional customers – the vast majority of those are for established sites.

The Knox – Bilton, Harrogate
The Knox often crops up as a dog-friendly favourite, with furry companions being considered very much part of the family.
The pub’s website says:

Sportsman’s Arms, Wath, Nidderdale
The quaint hamlet of Wath is in a wonderful area for walking; the circular route from Pateley Bridge is particularly good, four miles out along the northern fellside and back along the river.
Once you have stretched your legs, you can enjoy a refreshing pint and a spot of lunch in the bar area of this family-run 17th-century country inn, while your dog curls up under your seat.

The Royal Oak, Staveley, Knaresborough

Staveley is actually home to a nature reserve, which takes you on a lone walk that stretches beyond the village. It has many wild and rare species of flowers and wildlife and is perfect for a summer dog walk (they are permitted on leads).
Once you have admired the otters, of which there are regular sightings, head to Royal Oak, a traditional country pub that reviewers on Trip Advisor have described as “the most dog-friendly place I have ever been to”.
The pub’s website says:
“A selection of local ales and various seating areas offer somewhere for everyone – even the four-legged friend.”
The huge beer garden is also very impressive if you want to catch some rays.
The Royal Oak, Ripon
Another Royal Oak, this time located in Ripon’s historic Kirkgate, this renovated 18th century coaching inn is a firm favourite with dog owners.
Enjoy a walk at nearby Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden and then head into Ripon for a wander.
The pub’s city centre location is a great base to explore this fabulous part of the district.
Dogs are allowed in the bar area and there is even a selection of dog-friendly tables in the restaurant if you have worked up an appetite.
Call for greater control over future of Nidderdale AONBThe guardians of Nidderdale’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty should be handed greater powers to determine the future shape of the landscape, it has been claimed.
Community leaders in both the Nidderdale AONB and the Howardian Hills AONB said while the areas were almost indistinguishable from their neighbouring national parks, they did not have the same protections.
National parks can make their own planning decisions, but decisions about AONBs are made remotely, often by people lacking local knowledge or expertise, they said.
Nidderdale AONB board member Keith Tordoff said the area had its own environmental and economic ecosystem to consider, but key decisions were being made by Harrogate Borough Council. He said:
“Harrogate is too remote from what is going on in Nidderdale. I would say it’s more important for the AONB to have input in planning decisions than planning officers who are based in Harrogate.
“Planning is something that should have been part and parcel of AONBs when they were established, like national parks, and there’s an argument that Nidderdale should have been included in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
“For planning issues it’s very important that it should be people who are already working in the AONB area and understand the issues.”
However, Councillor Margaret Atkinson, whose Masham division includes part of Nidderdale AONB, which covers 233 square miles, said she hoped the views the AONB’s executive provided about planning applications were already taken into account.
She added she was confident the formation of a unitary authority and ‘double devolution’, where extra powers will be offered to local areas, would see greater local expertise in dealing with rural issues.
Equivalent recognition
The comments come as the government considers proposals to strengthen AONBs planning powers to recognise AONBs are just as important for people and nature, but lack equivalent recognition in law or support in resources.
The government consultation follows the Glover Landscapes Review finding AONBs do not always have the resources to meaningfully engage with the planning system, and that their advice is sometimes given limited weight in planning decisions.
A government spokesman said it recognised weighing up planning decisions needed to be carried out differently in protected landscapes, to ensure their statutory purposes and special qualities are meaningfully protected.
One suggestion includes granting AONBs statutory consultee status, alongside bodies such as highways authorities and water firms, for planning applications to ensure greater weight is given to their special qualities in
planning policies, procedures, and decisions.
Councillors representing the Howardian Hills AONB said elevating its status in the planning process would help with specific issues, such as significantly higher house prices to the surrounding area and poor access to services.
A North York Moors National Park spokesman said it supported strengthening the AONB team’s planning powers as it was likely to be beneficial to delivering objectives in the national park.

Harrogate district set to become health destination in echo of Victorian past
Long before ‘wellness’ became a buzzword, the Victorians were effectively already practising it.
And Harrogate led the way — even back then.
The wealthy and fashionable flocked to the spa town to experience its green open spaces and recuperative and healing powers of spring waters, which were first discovered by William Slingsby in the late 16th century.
Health and wellbeing hotspot
Now, more than a century after the Victorian era, Harrogate Borough Council’s new tourism body, Destination Harrogate, is set to promote the district as a health and wellbeing hotspot once again.
It will draw on the district’s rich spa heritage and accessibility to the great outdoors to attract visitors, events and investment to create a strong local economy.
The approach forms one of three key objectives in a three-year plan, which sets out a vision, priorities and actions that will be put in place to make the district “a first choice destination”.
Speaking to the Stray Ferret, Gemma Rio, head of Destination Harrogate, explained what this would involve.
She said:
“People have been coming to Harrogate since 1571 to take the waters and have a leisure experience, so that’s not new, but it has developed over the years.
“Now you can still go to the Royal Pump Room Museum and understand the spa heritage and our roots and how we became this great leisure destination, but you can also go to the Turkish Baths, you can go and have an incredible spa experience at Rudding Park or Grantley Hall.
“So the whole district is very good at that traditional health and wellbeing piece.”

Wellbeing different for everyone
Ms Rio, who was appointed in October 2020, said one lesson that had been learnt as a result of the pandemic was that health and wellbeing is different to everyone.
She said:
“For some people it is a massage and a jacuzzi, but to others it’s a walk in the Nidderdale AONB, or it’s seeing a show at the theatre, or it’s just being with family around the table at one of our great independent restaurants. So that’s what we are going to try and pull out in our campaign.”
The multi-channel campaign, which will have a digital marketing focus, is being launched in April and will run for most of the year.
Ms Rio said:
“If someone is a really avid walker, we want to tell them that story and plan itineraries for them around walking and country pubs.
“Our supporting campaigns will also try and pick up the same messages.
“Every year Visit Harrogate ran a successful gardening campaign. Our partners loved that campaign, they have seen some great results from it.
“Obviously as a destination, gardening is a real strength of ours as well. We’ve got RHS Harlow Carr, Newby Hall and various places that have great gardens.
“So even our gardens campaign is going to try and link in with the health and wellbeing priority as well.”

Attracting business events
The focus on health and wellbeing will also be used to attract more leisure and business events, with one of the target sectors for conferences being the medical industry, Ms Rio explained.
She said:
“Where else to hold your medical conference than a destination that has this incredible spa heritage and medical story to tell?
“Where better to base you new health and wellbeing business, or really any business?
“If you want to invest in a place, knowing that you’re going to be somewhere where your employees health and wellbeing will be looked after. A place where their work/life balance will be stronger. It’s much easier to employ people to come and join you if you base yourself somewhere like the Harrogate district.
“It’s a really exciting campaign.”
Collaboration is key
Ms Rio said when the three-year blueprint, known as the Destination Management Plan (DMP), was written, a consultation with residents and businesses was carried out in order to come up with the three main priorities set out in the document.
She said:
“This theme came up over and over again and I think in many ways it’s a bit of a no-brainer. We’ve got the history, we’ve got a great story to tell.
“Health and wellbeing has rocketed as a trend over the past couple of years. Plus we already have strong products, like the Turkish Baths. So it’s not trying to promote something that we are not actually that good at.
“It’s not rocket science what we have come up with. But I think what we have not done as a destination is work together to really push that in the same way that a place like Bath does.
“The story has always been there but we haven’t really taken advantage of it in a way that we can now.
“Everyone is really keen to work with us to see this become a success, and I think as a destination that’s the only way it can work. That collaboration is absolutely key.”
‘Core part’ of district’s identity
Ms Rio said the health and wellbeing campaign will continue to evolve and grow as a “core part” of the district’s identity.
She said:
“Other campaigns will run alongside it to highlight other strands such as retail or arts and culture, but there will always be this golden thread running through it.
“A trip to Harrogate district is good for you, regardless of whether you are into massage, theatre or walking.”

One of the main messages that will be promoted by the campaign will be length of stay, which will aim to encourage visitors to come for long weekends or weeks away in the district.
Ms Rio added:

So we are adding some functionality to the Visit Harrogate website this year that makes it easy for someone to say ‘I’m going to go to this experience in the morning, have lunch at this pub, stay at this hotel’. That helps to encourage people to stay longer, which benefits the local economy.”
A Nidderdale landowner has been awarded a grant to set up a curlew conservation project.
Clive White, who has farmed in Darley for 35 years, received the grant from the Farming in Protected Landscapes programme run by Nidderdale AONB.
The programme is funded by the government’s Agricultural Transition Plan.
It supports schemes that promote nature recovery, mitigate the impacts of climate change, provide better access or engagement with the land, or increase the business resilience of nature friendly farms.
The Darley Beck Curlew Project will aim to reduce curlew egg and chick losses to predators and farming techniques.

Farmers who have signed up will permit bird surveyors to perform studies on their land on the success of curlew breeding in the area and the effects of predation and farming activities, such as silage.
They will then consult to find out what needs to be done to help the curlews and how much it will cost.
Mr White said;
“Most of the farmers who have joined this cluster, especially the older ones, have noticed the decline in curlew numbers over the last three or four decades and are willing to find out how they might be able to help reverse this decline.”

He will be working in partnership with Nidderdale’s FIPL officer, Matthew Trevelyan, who said;
“As a farmer, I know that if these projects are farmer-led, it will be of great advantage. My experience of this fund to date is that, with a little imagination and passion, it can be used to support brilliant and realistic projects that partner farmers with ecologists and conservation organisations.”
Curlews have been listed as ‘near threatened’ on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species since 2008.
Participants aim to have the conservation project up and running in time for this year’s breeding season.
