Car catches fire in Harrogate multi-storey car park

Harrogate firefighters were called to the fifth floor of the town’s Victoria Car Park yesterday when a car caught fire.

Both Harrogate appliances were summoned to the multi-storey near the train station following reports of smoke billowing from the boot of the vehicle in the multi-storey.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s incident report said:

“Fire crews used a hose reel, breathing apparatus, thermal camera and tools to access and extinguish the fire.”

It added the cause was attributed to an electrical fault to a CD multi-changer in the car boot.

The incident proved to be the start of a busy morning for Harrogate firefighters.

At 10.36am,  they released two people trapped in a lift at an undisclosed location on Crescent Road in Harrogate.

Then at 11.41am, a women’s walking group alerted them to a cow trapped in barbed wire on a fence at the edge of woodland off the A661 Harrogate Road at Spofforth

The incident report added:

“On finding the cow, the fire officer was able to establish which farm the cow belonged to. The farmer then attended with bolt croppers to free the cow.”

Three fire crews called to Ripon house blaze

Firefighters from Ripon, Boroughbridge and Harrogate were called to a house fire in Ripon last night.

The crews were alerted to smoke billowing from the roof of a detached home in the Gallows Hill area of the city at 6.21pm.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used the aerial ladder platform  based at Harrogate Fire Station to tackle the fire on the third floor.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service‘s incident report said:

“The cause was believed to be radiated heat from the flue of a wood-burning stove.”

No further details have been released.

Driver rescued from Ripon ford as flood threat continues

Police and firefighters were called to Ripon last night when a vehicle got stuck in floodwater in a ford across the River Skell.

The ford at Firs Avenue is notoriously difficult to cross when water levels are high.

The Stray Ferret reported in September that a Fiat had to be towed out.

Now another vehicle — ironically a Ford — has also encountered difficulties. It was still awaiting recovery this morning.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 6.21pm to a similar incident.

Its incident report said a single vehicle had become stuck in floodwater after attempting to cross the ford.

“On the arrival of crews, the driver of the vehicle had been assisted out of the water by a member of the public.

“The driver was checked over by police officers and given advice.

“Crews closed off the ford and footbridge with assistance from the police.”

The footbridge was closed following the incident.

The Met Office forecasts a drier day today but flood warnings remain in place for Boroughbridge camping and caravanning site on the River Ure, Swinney Beck at Masham and the the River Nidd at Hunsingore. Flood warnings indicate flooding is likely.

Less severe flood alerts are active for the lower River Ure  and the lower River Nidd catchment areas.

Firefighters with breathing apparatus tackle Harrogate kitchen fire

Firefighters used breathing apparatus to deal with a kitchen fire that broke out in Harrogate last night.

Fire crews from Harrogate, Knaresborough and Boroughbridge were called to Grange Avenue, which is one of the roads between Skipton Road and King’s Road, at 9.37pm.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s incident report said:

“The fire had started under the kitchen units, believed to have been caused by faulty wiring.

“Crews entered the property wearing breathing apparatus and used one hose reel jet to extinguish. They then assisted with ventilating the property using a positive pressure ventilation fan.

“The fire caused approximately 15% fire damage to the kitchen units and smoke logging throughout the property.”

Firefighters tackle car fire at Aldi in Knaresborough

Firefighters were called to a car fire in the Aldi car park in Knaresborough yesterday.

A full-time crew from Harrogate was joined by on-call firefighters from Boroughbridge to deal with the incident.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the incident at 5.54pm.

It’s incident report gives no details other than to confirm the fact that firefighters attended.

The car was situated close to the store’s main entrance and eye-witness reports said the site at Swallowtail Way was evacuated.

Two people rescued from car stuck in flood in Boroughbridge

Two people were rescued today after their car got stuck in flood water in Boroughbridge.

Firefighters were summoned to the town at 8.22am, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service‘s incident report said.

It added:

“Crews from Ripon and Knaresborough attended a water rescue involving a vehicle stuck in flood water with two persons trapped inside.

“Crews used water rescue gear to retrieve the individuals and got them to safety.”

No further details, including the precise location, have been revealed.

It comes after firefighters were called to a house with two-feet of water in Boroughbridge last night.

Firefighters were also called to a fire in the lounge of a home near East Parade in Harrogate today.

Harrogate firefighters were summoned at 1.19pm.

The incident report said:

“The fire was out on the arrival but the room was heavily smoke logged.

“The crew ventilated the property and carried out an inspection.”

Air ambulance called after pedestrian injured in Boroughbridge

Firefighters and an air ambulance rescued a man trapped beneath a vehicle in Boroughbridge last night.

The pedestrian was struck by the vehicle on Springfield Road at about 7pm, according to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

He was then flown to hospital in one of two local air ambulance call-outs last night — a person also required the service following a collision on the A61 Ripon Road.

The incident report said:

“One male was trapped under the vehicle and released by crews using stabilising gear and crew power.

“Crews provided first aid until arrival of air ambulance, who transported the male to hospital suffering a leg injury.”

Firefighters from Boroughbridge and Knaresborough attended the incident.

Emergency services called to person trapped in barbed wire in Harrogate

Police and firefighters were called to deal with a person trapped in barbed wire in Harrogate yesterday.

Harrogate firefighters were summoned to assist police at Ripon Way, which runs alongside the former gasworks site earmarked for the new Tesco supermarket, at 9.06pm.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service‘s incident report said:

“Harrogate crews responded to assist police with a person trapped in barbed wire.

“The person was released prior to fire service arrival with no action taken by crews.”

No details of how the person became trapped, the extent of any injuries or the precise location on Ripon Way, have been released.

Firefighters also dealt with a fire at premises on Scriven Road in Knaresborough at 3.06am this morning.

The incident report said a gas pipe had caught fire. It added:

“Fire extinguished using two breathing apparatus and one hose reel. Incident handed into care of gas board.”

Police and fire HQ evacuated after person hands in grenades

North Yorkshire’s police and fire service headquarters was evacuated when a member of the public handed in a box of grenades yesterday.

The unnamed person is believed to have found the grenades while clearing their house, North Yorkshire Police said in a brief statement today.

When they were handed in to reception, staff were told to leave the Alverton Court building at Northallerton and bomb disposal experts called in.

The statement does not give further details on how the mix-up occurred other than to say they believed the grenades were handed in “in good faith”.

Staff returned to their desks more than two hours later.

Between 400 and 500 staff from North Yorkshire Police transferred from the previous headquarters at Newby Wiske Hall to Alverton Court in 2017 in a £7 million move. The building was previously home to the Rural Payments Agency.

“The headquarters of North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service in Northallerton was evacuated at around 1.50pm on the afternoon of Friday 27 October.

“In good faith, a member of the public handed a box of what were believed to be grenades, found during a house clearance, into the police station reception.

“North Yorkshire Police evacuated the building, put a cordon in place to protect staff and members of the public, and contacted the army’s explosive ordnance disposal team.

“The EOD team arrived and removed the items, and staff were able to return to the building. No-one was injured during the incident that concluded at around 3.45pm.”

Another fire at Birstwith factory

Firefighters from Harrogate and Knaresborough used breathing apparatus to tackle a factory fire in Birstwith.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to reports of a fire in a flour drying unit measuring 60 metres x 20 metres at Kerry Ingredients at 12.29pm yesterday.

Its incident report said:

“The fire caused 30% fire damage and 50% smoke damage to the drying unit only.

“The cause of the fire was overheating product in the dryer. Crews used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, a thermal imaging camera, a triple extension ladder and small tools to deal with the incident.”

It is not the first time firefighters have been called to the three-storey former mill.

In August last year, Ripon and Knaresborough crews used breathing apparatus to tackle a blaze in a drying plant.

The cause of the incident was not revealed.
