Harrogate man banned from keeping animals for five years

A Harrogate man has been banned from keeping animals for five years after being found guilty of cruelty.

Robbie Nelson, 24, neglected a Mastiff called Rocco and a Lurcher called Smudge at a house on High Street, Harrogate, in March last year.

The case was brought by animal charity the RSPCA.

Nelson failed to turn up in court to respond to the charges on December 17 last year and was found guilty in his absence.

Police issued a warrant for his arrest on the same day and eventually arrested him in June.

He was then remanded on bail for pre-sentence reports to be prepared.

Nelson, of Woodfield View, Harrogate, appeared before North Yorkshire Magistrates Court in York on Tuesday for sentencing.

Magistrates disqualified him from owning or being left in charge of any animal for five years.

He was also ordered to pay £200 costs and a £95 surcharge to fund victim services, and was given a community order to undertake rehabilitation activity.

The RSPCA will decide what to do with Rocco and Smudge.

Harrogate district woman found guilty of harassing neighbours

A Harrogate district woman has been found guilty of harassing her neighbours for almost a year.

Summer Sugar, 50, was found guilty of harassment by anti-social behaviour, including consistent noise nuisance, intense loud banging on walls for prolonged periods and playing loud music.

Sugar, of Masham, was also guilty of taking photos of her neighbours while they did work on their house and were in the garden, as well as making malicious complaints to Yorkshire Water about them blocking her drain, which turned out to be false.

The prosecution said the behaviour, which lasted from September 15, 2019 until August 25, 2020, caused the family next door “a severe amount of distress”.

Sugar was found guilty at North Yorkshire Magistrates Court, sitting in York, on Tuesday.

She was remanded on unconditional bail until July 26 when she will appear before York magistrates again.

Man caught masturbating in public in Harrogate sentenced

A man who was caught masturbating in public in Walkers Passage has been conditionally discharged.

A 54-year-old Harrogate man pleaded guilty on Monday to outraging public decency.

Appearing before Harrogate Magistrates Court, he was handed a conditional discharge for 12 months.

The incident occurred in September last year.

Walkers Passage is a popular cut through linking Harcourt Drive and Park Parade, on the edge of the Stray.

The court took into account the man’s guilty plea when imposing the sentence.

However, he was ordered to pay a £22 surcharge towards victim services and £85 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service.
