North Yorkshire Police were today called to the Cheltenham Crescent area of Harrogate after members of the public raised concerns about a man’s behaviour.
In a statement issued by the force, police said officers were called to a “disturbance” involving a man whose behaviour was “causing alarm among members of the public, in particular, his behaviour towards women”.
It added:
“The man became aggressive towards officers and was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.
“However, he was taken to hospital initially due to concerns about his health and intoxication.”
No further details have been revealed.

Police to carry life-saving nasal spray to prevent drug overdoses
North Yorkshire Police officers are to begin carrying a life-saving nasal spray to tackle the effects of opioid overdose.
The force has joined 28 other UK police forces by rolling out the spray to response and neighbourhoods policing team officers in the initial phase. The scheme will be gradually expanded over a few years.
More than 250 frontline officers have volunteered to carry Naloxone.
Naloxone, which is safe to use, will be administered by officers via a nasal spray, which is easier to use than the injection-based variant.
Assistant chief constable Catherine Clarke said:
“Naloxone is the emergency antidote used to reverse the effects of opioid overdose. If administered within 15 minutes, Naloxone can restore normal breathing to a person if it has slowed or stopped.
“The main cause of premature death among people who use drugs in the UK is drug overdose. Many of the reported deaths could potentially have been avoided if Naloxone had been administered, which buys more time for medical intervention by ambulance and hospital teams. This really is a life saver.”
Someone who experienced this first hand is Harrogate woman Emma Plant.
Her life was saved by the kit after she accidentally overdosed and was revived with naloxone. Ms Plant was a heroin and cocaine addict for 10 years. She said:
“It just spiralled out of control, I actually used to go over quite a lot and my friends would call the ambulance.”
She experienced an overdose in a shared household. A man in the house found her unconscious and used the naloxone to revive her.
Ms Plant said:
“He used the Naloxone on me and saved my life. What he said to me is that I’d gone blue, I wasn’t breathing, I was gone, and I didn’t believe it. Now I think about it I think, wow, he actually saved my life. I could’ve not been here today if it wasn’t for him having that naloxone on him.”
Ms Plant is now clean and employed as a community engager with Red Rose Recovery in Harrogate. She is also part of the new Peer 2 Peer Naloxone Guardians who will be distributing more Naloxone in the community.
North Yorkshire Police’s harm reduction officer Danny Stannard delivers the first Naloxone training sessions to frontline officers.
As a member of the North Yorkshire Drug and Alcohol Partnership, the force says it has a part to play alongside emergency services and community partners in preserving life and reducing harm for substance users.
A consultation on a draft North Yorkshire substance use (drugs and alcohol) strategy ends on April 30, 2024.
Public health experts and national organisations including the National Police Chiefs’ Council, the College of Policing and the Independent Office of Police Complaints (IOPC), will support the police in using naloxone.

Police release CCTV image after Harrogate shop theft
North Yorkshire Police has released a CCTV image of a man they wish to speak to regarding a Harrogate shop theft.
The incident happened on March 17 at approximately 6pm at the One Stop Shop on Knaresborough Road.
Officers said around £140 worth of goods were stolen, including coffee and body sprays.
The force added:
“Please contact us if you recognise the man on CCTV, as he may have information that will assist our investigation.”

Man, 31, dies following collision on A1(M) near Boroughbridge
A man has died after his HGV lorry collided with an overhead bridge on the A1(M) this morning.
North Yorkshire Police said the incident, which happened at around 2.10am, occurred on the southbound carriageway of the motorway between junction 48 (Boroughbridge) and junction 47 (Allerton Park).
Police closed the A1(M) this morning to respond to the incident. The force said the southbound carriageway is now expected to be open after 4pm.
In an updated statement, the force said the HGV lorry collided with an overhead bridge near the Allerton Waste Recovery site. The driver died at the scene.
It added:
“The southbound carriageway was closed to allow emergency services to attend the incident and investigate the scene. It currently remains closed for scene recovery work to take place, two lanes are expected to open to traffic after 4pm.
“We’re now urging anyone who saw the collision or the HGV involved in the collision prior to it that has not already made contact to get in touch. Our officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have any relevant dashcam footage.

Officers also took to social media this afternoon to ask motorists not to use their phones when driving.
It came after several people drove past and filmed the scene of the collision on the A1(M).
Police said it would be taking action against the drivers. A spokesperson for the force added:
“We have taken registration details of approximately 30 vehicles, and we will follow up with action against the drivers – this will ultimately be points and a fine, but they may end up in court.”
Drivers warned to expect delays after serious collision closes A1(M)
Drivers should expect delays on the A1 this morning after a serious collision near Boroughbridge.
North Yorkshire Police said the incident happened on the southbound carriageway at around 2.20am.
The force said the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) is currently closed between junction 48 (Boroughbridge) and junction 47 (Allerton Park) and is expected to be for some time.
However, the northbound carriageway has now reopened.
National Highways has advised drivers to allow more time for journeys as the southbound carriageway is expected to be closed throughout the morning.
A spokesperson said:
“The southbound carriageway is expected to remain closed beyond the morning’s peak travel period as emergency services and National Highways traffic officers remain at the scene of the incident, which happened at around 2.20am.
“Collision investigations are currently taking place, with recovery and repairs also expected throughout the morning following an oil spill and repairs needed to the central barrier.
“There are currently delays of more than 60 minutes on the southbound carriageway.”
A diversion is in place along the A168, which runs parallel to the A1(M).

Police investigate suspected dog poisonings at Harrogate reservoir
North Yorkshire Police is investigating suspected dog poisonings at Lindley Wood Reservoir near Harrogate.
Police are appealing for information following the death of two dogs at the site. The animals died after eating something that is believed to be toxic on a walk at the reservoir between March 31 and April 15.
The Stray Ferret reported on Friday that Yorkshire Water, which owns the reservoir, had urged dog walkers to remain vigilant.
Police are carrying out enquiries and said in a statement released today:
“We were made aware of what happened at around 4pm on Tuesday, April 16.
“If you have any information that can help us with our investigation, please get in touch. We would also like to hear from any other dog owners who believe their dog may have been affected in similar circumstances after visiting the location in recent weeks.”
Last week, dog owners took to social media to report the suspected poisoning. A five-year-old Cockerpoo and a puppy died after being walked at the site.
Lindley Wood, along with nearby Swinsty, Fewston and Thruscross reservoirs is owned by Yorkshire Water.
A Yorkshire Water spokesperson urged dog owners to remain vigilant and to report anything suspicious at its reservoirs.
They said:
“We are saddened to hear of these incidents, which we were made aware of via social media. Our colleagues have not found anything suspicious at the reservoir, but we would encourage the dog owners to reach out to our customer service team and share specific details of where they were walking at the time so we can establish if this was on land owned by Yorkshire Water, and if so, support with any required investigation.
“In the meantime, we would continue to urge walkers and owners to remain vigilant and keep their dogs on a lead when walking around our reservoirs, for their safety, and the safety of surrounding wildlife.”

Dog owners urged to be ‘vigilant’ amid reported ‘poisoning’ at reservoir near Harrogate
Yorkshire Water has urged dog owners to be “vigilant” after reports of multiple dogs being poisoned at a reservoir near Harrogate.
Owners have taken to social media to report suspected poisoning when walking at Lindley Wood Reservoir, in the Washburn Valley, Harrogate.
Leeds man James Bevan lost his Cockerpoo, Winston, to acute kidney failure from toxic poisoning. The five-year-old dog ate something toxic on Sunday, April 7, at the reservoir and died eight days later.
Winston was a healthy award-winning agility dog and Mr Bevan said in a post on social media:
“Please do not walk in Lindley Wood at the moment with your dog. Tell people who do about this as it can’t be a coincidence and I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.
“I don’t have the words to do this justice right now. Maybe I never will. Everyone knows what he meant to us. My boy. My best friend. My team mate. My world. He changed our lives completely and made everyone who met him love him.”
Other dog owners have also taken to social media to warn walkers about the reservoir. Another dog who died from similar circumstances after being walked at the site was a puppy named Bear.

The company told the Stray Ferret that it was aware of the reports, but at this stage there has been no substance found.
However, a Yorkshire Water spokesperson urged dog owners to remain vigilant and to report anything suspicious at its reservoirs.

Couple hand themselves in following Harrogate shop theft
A couple have handed themselves into the police following a CCTV appeal issued on Monday (April 15).
North Yorkshire Police released a set of CCTV images at the time to appeal for information following a theft at TK Maxx, in Harrogate‘s Victoria Shopping Centre, on February 25.
Police said on Monday “a woman and a man bagged various of items including sandals, trainers and T-shirts, leaving the store without making payment.
However, the force today (April 17) issued an updated statement, which said a local couple in their 50s “saw the appeal and came forward to the police to admit the theft”.
It added:
“With agreement from the store manager, a Community Resolution Disposal was applied which involved the couple paying for the goods valued over £100 within 24 hours.”

CCTV appeal after Harrogate M&S theft
North Yorkshire Police has issued a CCTV image of a woman it wants to speak to following a theft in Harrogate.
The incident happened at M&S Simply Food at Beech Avenue, at about 2pm on Friday, February 23.
According to a police statement today (Monday, April 15), a woman stole large amounts of alcohol in her bag.
The statement said:
“Please contact us if you recognise the women pictured on CCTV, as she may have information that will assist our investigation.”
Police would like to speak to the woman in the picture.

Man arrested after car crash and brawl in Harrogate
A man has been arrested following a car crash and suspected assault in Harrogate last night.
North Yorkshire Police today said two vehicles collided on Otley Road at the junction with Wharfedale Place at around 6pm.
According to a force statement, the two men then got into an “altercation at the scene” and both sustained injuries. The statement added:
“The man in his 30s was taken to hospital for treatment in relation to chest injuries. His injuries are believed not to be life-threatening.
“A man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of assault and was also taken to hospital for facial injuries.”
Police said an investigation has now been launched.

North Yorkshire Police has issued a CCTV image of a man it wants to talk to after alcohol was stolen in Harrogate.
According to a statement issued last night, £76 worth of alcohol was taken from Marks & Spencer Simply Food on Beech Avenue.
It happened at about 5.50pm on Saturday, March 23.
