The Stray Ferret Business Awards to make its return in 2024

Not even an amber weather warning could stop the Stray Ferret Business Awards in March, with a turnout of nearly 400 people and many smiling faces, we’re looking forward to doing it all again in 2024.

Following the success of our inaugural event, the Stray Ferret Business Awards will be making its return next year – and we’re ready to receive your entries!

Sponsored by local financial advisers Prosperis, the Stray Ferret Business Awards 2024 will take place in the Pavilions of Harrogate on Thursday, March 14.

The awards ceremony will recognise businesses of all sectors and sizes to highlight the best and brightest in the Harrogate district’s business community – including Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough, Boroughbridge, Masham and Nidderdale.

The black-tie event will include our all-important awards ceremony, a special Winner’s Lounge sponsored by LCF Law and entertainment throughout the evening

Line-up for Harrogate literature festival revealed

The line-up for this year’s Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival has been announced today.

Authors and thinkers will descend on the Crown Hotel in Harrogate for the four-day event produced by Harrogate International Festivals and sponsored by Harrogate law firm Raworths Solicitors.

Speakers at the festival, which takes place from October 19 to 22, range from leading authors Victoria Hislop, Alison Weir and Andy McNab to ex-cricketer Monty Panesar and media star Dr Hilary Jones.

For lovers of historical literature, Ms Hislop will introduce her new novel, The Figurine and historian and author Ms Weir, author of the Sunday Times bestselling Six Tudor Queens series, will explore the life of one of Britain’s most infamous monarchs, Henry VIII, the subject of her latest historical novel.

Royal correspondent and author Robert Hardman will share insights from his account of Elizabeth II’s reign,Queen of Our Times and ex-England cricketer Monty Panesar will recount stories from his sporting career.

Andy McNab, who has written three best-selling books about his life in the SAS, will give the inside line on his latest fictional thriller, Down to the Wire and comedian Rosie Holt will share the story behind how she became an internet sensation.

Dr Hilary Jones will join a panel exploring the challenges currently faced by the NHS and husband and wife team Carrie and David Grant tell the tale of their extraordinary family, explored in their new book A Very Modern Family.

Celebrity TV chef to speak at Harrogate literature festival

A celebrity TV chef has been announced as a speaker at this year’s Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival.

Rosemary Shrager, whose career has spanned four decades, has featured on programmes such as ITV series Ladette to Lady and I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.

She has also authored several cookbooks.

Ms Shrager will feature as lunchtime speaker at this year’s festival.

Sharon Canavar, chief executive of Harrogate International Festivals, said: 

“We can’t wait to introduce Harrogate audiences to our exciting line-up for this year’s literature festival and we are certain that Rosemary will deliver an insightful and entertaining segment which is not to be missed.”

A Harrogate legal firm has been recognised by a leading industry guide for the seventh year running.

Raworths’ trust, wills and states team has been ranked Band 1 by the Chambers High Net Worth Guide 2023.

The team is the only firm ranked Band 1 for the region of York, Hull, and surrounding area, while also ranked in the National Leaders category outside London.

Celebrity body-builder to promote Harrogate store 

A cast member of the BBC’s reboot of Gladiators is due to host a meet and greet at a Harrogate store.

Fitness fanatics will be able to meet bodybuilder, Jamie Christian-Johal, nicknamed ‘The Giant’, at Harrogate supplement store, Go Herbs.

At 6ft 5 inches Mr Christian-Johal is one of the tallest professional bodybuilders in the world .

Go Herbs, located on Station Parade, is run by the team behind Power Body Nutrition – a health, fitness, and nutritional supplement distributor.

The shop stocks MUTANT products, which are promoted by the bodybuilder, and include supplements used to significantly increase strength and muscle mass.

Power Body sales manager, Joe Taylor-Ferguson, said:

“We are thrilled to announce that we will be hosting the incredible bodybuilder, Jamie ‘The Giant’, renowned not only for his awe-inspiring strength but also for his remarkable journey as an athlete in-store as a part of our MUTANT promotional day for residents.

Farmison & Co has appointed a new chief executive.

The online butcher, which was recently bought out by a consortium led by former Asda CEO Andy Clark, has recruited Andy Adcock to take up the position.

Mr Adcock is a former managing director at M&S and has spent 20 years in the food trade.

Mr Clark, executive chairman at Farmison, said:

“I’d like to welcome Andy to the Farmison team – I’ve every confidence he’ll bring even more momentum as we build a sustainable future for our business.” 

The appointment comes as the meat retailer has also announced a partnership with delivery service Gopuff.

It means products including bacon, sausages chicken and steaks, will be available for 15 minute delivery in Gopuff’s London delivery area.

New partner at Harrogate’s solicitors

Harrogate solicitors Raworths has announced it has appointed a new partner.

Rachel Mainwaring-Taylor will join the firm’s trusts, wills and estates team as part of a strategic growth plan at the company.

A family law firm has relocated to new offices in Harrogate.

Barnes Clark Family Law has moved its staff to Windsor House on Cornwall Road.

The company joins more than 110 other businesses at the office building.

New recruits join Harrogate law firm

A Harrogate law firm has hired three new recruits and qualified two solicitors as part of ongoing growth at the company.

Raworths, which is based on Station Parade, has made the appointments in its private client and commercial teams.

Katie Johnston has joined the trusts, wills and estates team as solicitor, while Lucy Allen also joins as a paralegal.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Newman also joins the team as a newly qualified solicitor, having completed her training contract at Raworths.

Alongside the hires, Katie Jaros has joined the commercial team as a solicitor and Tracy McKenna has qualified as a solicitor.

A Harrogate opticians director is set to retire after 30 years in business.

Robert May, director of Harrogate Specsavers, has overseen the growth of the opticians on Beulah Street from three test rooms and six staff to 11 testing rooms and a team of 50 people.

Mr May will leave the store to optometrist directors Fraz Khan and Caroline Sullivan, as well as Andrew Bryer, retail director.

On his retirement, Mr May said:

“I often say to people, in what other job do you get the opportunity to make a difference to someone’s life every 20 minutes? 

“There’s so much more to it than just getting customers new glasses. I’ve experienced the industry progress from pen and paper to full retinal photos and OCT scans, the level of holistic eye healthcare we can provide is really exciting.”

Mr Khan added:

“Robert has been a pleasure to work with over the last two years and he will be dearly missed by staff and customers alike.

“He’s gone above and beyond during his 30 years as an optometrist director and we hope he enjoys his well-deserved retirement.”

New legal director at Harrogate law firm

Raworths Solicitors in Harrogate has appointed a new legal director.

Ms Roberts joins the firm with 20 years of experience of acting for investors, developers, landlords, tenants and banks.

The Pavilions of Harrogate has secured new high-end retail events for this year.

The venue, which is based at the Great Yorkshire Showground, has announced it is set to host the Sweaty Betty Sale, Joules Sale and the Boden Sale.

In the first quarter of the year Pavilions will host 150 events ranging from retail sales, to funerals, dinners and conferences.

The Sweaty Betty Sale starts at 1:30pm on Monday 20th March to Wednesday 22nd March, the Joules Sale will opens on Thursday 23rd to Saturday 25th March. The Boden Sale will be held on Wednesday 20th September and Thursday 21st September.

Raworths announces food bank as charity partner

A Harrogate law firm has chosen Harrogate District Foodbank has its charity partner for 2023.

Raworths staff will fundraise for the foodbank after voting for it to become the firm’s chosen charity.

Harrogate District Foodbank opened in 2013 and is funded by local churches, community groups and individuals, operating under the umbrella of national organisation, the Trussell Trust.

Simon Morris, managing partner at Raworths, said 

“People may not expect Harrogate to need a foodbank as it has a reputation as an affluent area, but the reality is, there are also areas which need extra support. 

“In fact, everyone is feeling the pinch and looking to rein in their spending which also impacts charities. We believe this charity’s services are invaluable, so we really want to support and help where we can.”

A Harrogate chartered accountants has been acquired by a national wealth management company.

Evelyn Partners has take over Leathers LLP, which has an office on Haggs Road.

The deal will see Evelyn Partners, which has offices and departments across the country, expand its services into the north of England.

Raworths makes new appointment

A Harrogate solicitors has announced a new appointment to its legal team.

Raworths, which has offices on Station Parade, has hired Lucy Allen as a paralegal.

Ms Allen will join the trusts, wills and estates team at the solicitors.

The move comes as Raworths announced its latest senior promotion last month as Adam Colville-Robins joined the dispute resolution team as an associate.

Mr Colville-Robins’ appointment was the latest in a series of promotions over the past year overseen by managing partner, Simon Morris.
