Fieldsports fans are in for a treat if they go along to the Yorkshire Event Centre in Harrogate from May 11-12, 2024 where The National Shooting Show (NSS) is being held.
Clay shooting, airgunning, HFT shooting, practical shooting and fullbore target shooting are all on offer. For non-shooters there are working dog displays, ferreting, falconry, archery and axe throwing too – the event promises to be an event the whole family can enjoy.
You may have known of the National Shooting Show under its previous guise as The Northern Shooting Show, so why the name change?
James Gower, CEO of organisers Stable Events explained:
“We looked where visitors to the show were coming from and rather than being focused on the north, people were coming from all over the UK – from London to Cornwall, Wales and the Midlands.
“So it was obviously a show of national interest and we changed the name to illustrate this. There are no plans to take it down south – we’ve also signed up for Harrogate in 2025 too.”
Try before you buy
Perhaps one of the biggest attractions of the NSS is that it enables visitors to try guns and optics outside on a range and see how kit they’re interested in buying handles.

Key figures from the worlds of stalking, keeping, clay shooting, wild food, gun dog training and pigeon shooting are acting as ‘ambassadors’ for the NSS. All will be present at the NSS, giving talks and on hand to answer questions and give useful tips.
Experiences
Ever fancied trying a .50 calibre rifle? Well, that’s just one of the experiences on offer, thanks to the Fifty Calibre Shooters Association (UK), which is offering visitors a rare chance to learn how to handle, load and aim a .50 calibre rifle under careful instruction.
Airsoft devotees will be pleased to hear that this fast-paced combat game is on offer at the Airsoft experience.
Not forgetting dogs
Watching a well-trained gun dog at work is a joy and Kirkbourne Spaniels will be running the BASC-sponsored scurry, as well as holding a working test competition. There is also a dog creche run by a qualified vet.

Talks
In the symposium area, figures from the world of fieldsports will be discussing the hot topics of the day. It is the perfect place to sit back, watch and listen when a rest is in order.
Food, glorious food
The Shooting Lodge is a great place to catch up with friends over a pint and a new cafe area will be offering wild game and venison.
Those searching for culinary inspiration will find it in BASC Hunter’s Kitchen, where game chefs will create new dishes for all levels of cookery skills, using nature’s larder.

Heather Parry steps down from top job at Harrogate’s Yorkshire Events Centre
The managing director of Harrogate’s Yorkshire Events Centre has stepped down after 30 years in post.
Heather Parry was credited with creating Fodder shop and cafe at the Great Yorkshire Showground in 2009 and overseeing the multi-million pound refurbishment of the events centre in 2016.
She joined the events centre after working in London at Earls Court Exhibition Centre.
Ms Parry was soon promoted to managing director of the commercial arm of the showground, overseeing the Pavilions of Harrogate and the Yorkshire Event Centre.
She also led the transformation of a disused area on the showground into what is now the Harrogate Caravan Park, with 67 pitches for caravans, motorhomes and tents.
On her decision to step down, she said:
“I am so proud of the things that have been achieved working with an amazing team. When I arrived the income from activities outside the Great Yorkshire Show was £40,000 so we have come a long way to the current £7m. There have been so many highs: from welcoming President Bill Clinton and Sir Elton John, among many others, to creating Fodder and building Hall 1.
“My career here has been wonderfully diverse; with people at the heart of it all; I feel so lucky to have worked with a myriad of clients, dedicated suppliers and a phenomenal team who have been a joy to nurture and develop. After 30 years it is now time to hand the baton on and seek new adventures.”
Allister Nixon, chief executive of the Yorkshire Events Centre, said:
“Heather has had a huge impact on the business, being instrumental in shaping and forming what we are today with vision and sheer hard work. Heather will leave an amazing legacy to be proud of.
“She has been part of the fabric of the society for so many years and I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Heather for her hard work, dedication and significant contributions and wish her the very best in her future endeavours.”

More Harrogate district covid booster clinics in coming weeks
People in the Harrogate district are urged to book their covid booster vaccines as more clinics are set to open.
Currently, appointments are being offered at the Yorkshire Events Centre and Chain Lane vaccination centre in Knaresborough as well as some local surgeries.
The autumn booster campaign began across most of the UK last week, with care home residents being vaccinated first.
Those aged 65 and over are now being invited to have their booster vaccine.
In Harrogate, some appointments will be available at the Great Yorkshire Showground’s Event Centre, although booking is advised via the NHS website or by calling 119.
A clinic was held from Monday to Thursday this week and another will take place in three weeks’ time.

Other sites delivering autumn vaccinations in the Harrogate district include Ripon Spa Surgery, Kingswood Medical Centre and East Parade Surgery.
Appointments at the site must be booked through the NHS. Patients are urged not to call surgeries to book their vaccines.
Steve Russell, NHS director of vaccinations and screening, said:
Harrogate events venue ‘bouncing back’ with new line-up revealed“There is no room for complacency in keeping covid-19 on the backfoot, and this autumn booster will help protect those most at risk.”
The Yorkshire Event Centre has unveiled its lineup of events for the rest of the year — which are all coming to Harrogate for the first time.
The conference and events venue at Harrogate’s Great Yorkshire Showground was closed for much of this year and last year due to covid and was used as a vaccination site from February until August.
The Great Taste Golden Fork Reception will be held at the YEC next month. It’s the first time the food show has ever been held outside London.
The Builders Merchants Federation, which brings together companies supplying building materials to the construction industry, will stage its All Industry Conference on Friday November 5 and 6.
And the Great Yorkshire Christmas Fair will relocate from Ripley Castle. The show, which offers Christmas gifts, will run from December 2 to 5.
