Partnerships are being created in Boroughbridge and Knaresborough to target underage drinking and anti-social behaviour.

Community alcohol partnerships (CAPs) are made up of partnerships between local authorities, police, schools, retailers, neighbourhood groups and health providers.

These organisations work together to tackle alcohol-related harm to young people and reduce anti-social behaviour.

The partnerships work with local schools to teach alcohol education, to ensure young people are equipped to make the right decisions about issues including drugs, anti-social and criminal behaviour.

They also work with local retailers to help them avoid making underage sales and reduce ‘proxy’ sales where adults buy alcohol for under-18s.

The national Community Alcohol Partnerships 2023 annual report said:

“CAPs have been exceptionally well received in North Yorkshire where we currently have eight active partnerships and five  set to launch soon. The region has many areas of high deprivation and relatively high rates of underage drinking and alcohol fueled youth anti-social behaviour.”

The district saw a partnership launched in Ripon in 2022 to tackle regular cases of underage drinking, reported at the time by The Stray Ferret.

North Yorkshire Police said in a statement:

“There will be two separate CAPs, one for Knaresborough and one for Boroughbridge and there will be a formal launch for each. Prior to launching we need to obtain information from the local community in the form of resident surveys.
"The responses from these surveys will help us determine what the local issues are. We will collate the information and use it to help us launch a CAP which focuses on issues that are relevant to the individual area."

The CAP survey for Boroughbridge can be accessed here and the Knaresborough one here.
