Dozens of homes in Boroughbridge were left without power this morning (December 31) when a telegraph pole caught fire.
On-call firefighters from Knaresborough were called to a fire at the top of an eight-foot pole on Spring Gardens at 4.47am.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s incident report said a crew member climbed a ladder and tackled the flames using a dry powder extinguisher.
The report added:
A thermal check using a thermal imaging camera was conducted after to confirm the fire was fully extinguished. The incident was then left with an electrical engineer enroute to inspect superficial fire damage to electrical housing and restore power to local residents.
Northern Powergrid, which is responsible for maintaining electricity supplies, said homes on Springfield Road, Springfield Drive, York Road, St James’ Meadow and Greenways were without power this morning.
However, numerous residents on other streets said on social media they had also been affected.
The latest update on Northern Powergrid's live power cuts map, at 7.20am, said:
“Our team are trying to get the power back on quickly by switching electricity through alternative routes on our network.”
It added it hoped to restore power by 10am.
