Charlie Nelson (left) and Robbie Nelson, and the firearm found by police.

Two brothers have been jailed for keeping an illegal weapon and a firearm at a house in Harrogate.

North Yorkshire Police today (January 30) said Charlie Roy Nelson, 31, and Robbie Nelson, 27, have each been jailed for five years.

Officers executed a warrant at a property in Harrogate on October 11, 2024, when they discovered a handgun, a “Samurai-style sword” and live and spent rounds in an outbuilding at the address.

The gun was originally a blank-firing gun, police said, but it had been modified and in turn became an illegal firearm.

A bag of cannabis was also found at the property.

DNA analysis was carried out on the firearm, which showed two significant contributors: the Nelson brothers.

Charlie was arrested at the location and later charged with possessing a firearm, ammunition for a firearm, an offensive weapon and class B drugs.

Robbie, who was already in prison at the time of the warrant, was charged with possession of a firearm.

Robbie, of Woodfield View in Harrogate, admitted the single charge at York Crown Court on January 30, before his brother admitted the string of offences on February 3.

Both brothers were sentenced at the same court today and ordered to spend five years behind bars.

Following sentence, North Yorkshire Police’s DC Amy Webster Gonzalez, said:

Thankfully, gun crime is extremely rare in our area – but we will never be complacent. These convictions show that we will do everything we can to take illegal weapons off the streets.

A nationwide amnesty for certain models of top-venting blank firers will run across the country from February 3 to 28.
