North Yorkshire Police.

North Yorkshire Police have targeted taxis in Harrogate as part of a week-long drugs crackdown.

Officers worked with North Yorkshire Council and British Transport Police on the operation between March 2 and 8.

Police today (March 13) said officers stopped taxis across Harrogate and York to check vehicles and identify any passengers who could have been transporting drugs in and out of the county.

Officers seized suspected cocaine, crack cocaine and cannabis, and recovered £10,500 in cash believed to be linked to drug supply, during the week-long operation.

In addition, children’s author Christina Gabbitas gave talks at schools across Harrogate about exploitation and knife crime.

Today’s statement said:

Safeguarding teams also carried out visits to protect vulnerable individuals believed to be at risk of being targeted or groomed by organised crime groups. Officers visited 26 addresses, safeguarded 10 people, and made four arrests during the week.

Chief superintendent Fran Naughton said illegal drugs “cause real harm” across local communities and is “often the root cause of a lot of the serious and organised crime we deal with”.

Chief supt Noughton added:

We will continue to target those involved in organised crime and ensure North Yorkshire remains a hostile place for anyone looking to bring drugs into our county.
