A planning application has revealed how a now-defunct nineteenth century pub in Kirkby Overblow could look once converted into a community hub.
North Yorkshire Council approved plans to convert The Star and Garter, which has been closed since 2018, into a community facility in January.
Charity Kirkby Overblow Community Hub, which was set up with the aim of purchasing the Follifoot Lane site, has said it wants to repair and renovate the building, and create a “multi-purpose indoor space for community use”.
But the latest application, lodged this month, seeks the council’s approval to make various changes to the building itself.
If approved, the charity would reinstate a pitched roof, install new sliding sash windows, build a replacement outbuilding, remove an extension including a fire escape staircase, and install solar panels.

A proposed floor plan shows there would also be four bedrooms at the converted site, which would be let out, plus a community hall, two storerooms and a toilet.
North Yorkshire Council will issue a verdict on the plans at a later date, but Kirkby Overblow Community Hub’s website said it proposes to use the multi-purpose indoor and outdoor areas throughout the year.
The communal space would be used to host meetings, community groups, workshops, youth clubs and private parties.
The charity, which hopes the conversion would generate interest in Kirkby Overblow’s heritage, hopes also to landscape the car park and the perimeter of the site.
The Stray Ferret contacted Kirkby Overblow Community Hub for comment, but we did not receive a response by the time of publication.
