Ripon and Boroughbridge pubs claim top spots in CAMRA awards

Pubs in Ripon and Boroughbridge have been recognised in the latest Harrogate and Ripon CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) awards, highlighting the strength of the region’s real ale scene and community pubs.
The Portly Pig in Ripon, which was taken over by new owners Stuart and Katie Ross in November 2024, has been crowned Harrogate and Ripon CAMRA Pub of the Year 2026.
The owners described the accolade as a “prestigious award”, thanking customers for their continued support following the announcement.
In a Facebook post, Stuart and Katie said:
When we took over the Pig, we never expected to have such an incredible year - we’ve met the most amazing people, shared stories and laughed until our bellies hurt!
It is lovely to be part of an incredible community that is Ripon, it is thriving because of all the amazing businesses it has to offer, with many independents.
Allan Gould, chairman of Harrogate and Ripon CAMRA, said the award recognises the pub’s promotion of real ale, its wide selection of draught beers and ciders, and its friendly atmosphere.
Mr Gould confirmed that CAMRA will present The Portly Pig with its award on the evening of April 16.
The Tap on the Tutt, Boroughbridge.
Elsewhere, in Boroughbridge, The Tap on the Tutt has been named Country Pub of the Year.
In an Instagram post, Simon Wade, owner of The Tap on the Tutt, said:
For the last three years, we’ve taken immense pride in serving top-quality cask marque accredited real ales, alongside a fantastic selection of draught ales and ciders. This recognition is a testament to our commitment and passion for delivering the best experience for our patrons.
Mr Gould also praised the range and quality of The Tap on the Tutt’s drinks, as well as its welcoming atmosphere.
No date has been officially set for the presentation of its award, although it is expected to take place in early May.
Speaking more broadly about the importance of supporting local pubs, Mr Gould referenced a quote from beer blogger Ron Pattinson, who said:
A good, or even a halfway decent, pub is more than just a building retailing alcoholic drinks. It's a community of people with varying ties of varying strength between its members, but it's a fragile thing. Once destroyed, it's almost impossible to recreate. The loss of a local is far more than the simple demolition of a building.
The sentiment reflects CAMRA’s belief that pubs are a vital part of local culture and communities, and should be supported wherever possible.
In an effort to support other local pubs, CAMRA has created a Ripon Ale Guide for local beer lovers. The guide, available at The Portly Pig, highlights 12 pubs serving a range of draught ales.
