A rough sleeper looks set to be moved on from Harrogate’s Stray.

The Stray Ferret was alerted yesterday (October 29) to a tent and a sleeping bag on the West Park section of the Stray, by Beech Grove.

Other items were also strewn across the grass.

The source said that the tent had been on the Stray since Monday.

It was still present when the Stray Ferret visited at 12pm today. However, it was unclear whether the tent was occupied.

Several items are strewn across the grass.

The Stray is intended to be enjoyed by all people but sleeping on it is prohibited by the 1985 Stray Act.

Judy d’Arcy-Thompson, chair of the Stray Defence Association, which protects the Stray from encroachment, said the person had been reported to North Yorkshire Council, which manages the Stray.

Ms d’Arcy-Thompson added:

We’ve had this issue before. A few years ago, someone parked up on Montpellier Hill and was using the shrubbery as his latrine. He was drunk by 9am and shouting at locals.

It is against the law to camp on the Stray so they’ll be removed by the council and the police if necessary.

We have contacted North Yorkshire Council for comment.
