Every Monday, the Stray Ferret publishes a round-up of sports action in the Harrogate district. We will focus on the first team results of local amateur and semi-professional sports clubs.

Here's what happened during the week of March 2 to 8.

1. Jekyll and Hyde week for Harrogate Railway

It was a week of two halves for Harrogate Railway last week, as Rob Youhill’s side followed up a 10-0 win with a 1-0 loss to their promotion rivals. Nathan Heaton, Joe Navier, Sam Clothier, Elliot Holmes, Alex Ingham, Harry Lynn and Harry Lee all got on the scoresheet as The Rail eased past bottom-placed Glasshoughton Welfare on Tuesday, with Ingham taking home the match ball. However, their efforts were sullied somewhat on Saturday, when the Station View side were edged out by fellow play-off contenders Brigg Town. Harrogate Railway have 71 points from 33 games and currently sit fourth in the NCEL Division One. Although their title hopes may well be over, with nine games to go, Rob Youhill will want his side to finish as strongly as possible as they eye a spot in the play-offs.

2. Knaresborough Town Women dish out thumping in bid for promotion

Knaresborough Town Women systematically picked apart the league’s worst team on Sunday, as Mike Bligh’s side pushes for four successive promotions. Rachel Carmichael, Lorna Wilkinson, Bethany Padget and Jenny Crossley all got on the scoresheet as The Boro beat Skipton 6-0 away. Match postponements due to poor weather have meant that Knaresborough have only managed to play six games since the new year. But, despite the disruption, they have done their best to keep their promotion hopes alive. With 26 points from 11 games, The Boro could leapfrog Wyke Wanderers into second place should they get at least two points from their three games in hand.

3. Harrogate Rugby Club triumph in local derby

Harrogate Rugby Club put on an impressive display to dismantle York in a local derby on Saturday, as Jake Brady’s side looks to secure a place in the playoff spots. Winning 63-5 at home, The Aces secured all five league points to keep Ilkley at bay, who are snapping at Harrogate’s heels in fourth place. With second-placed Alnwick also winning, the three teams are all within nine points of each other as we enter the final three games of the season. With only two play-off spots up for grabs, Harrogate need to win their remaining three games to ensure they don’t slip out of them.

4. Ripon Rockets complete perfect season

Ripon Rockets created history on Monday as they finished their league season having won every single game. The Rockets have had a completely dominant season in the NYNAL Senior Winter League Division One this year, winning all 18 of their games. They had a goal difference of 403, 356 more than the league’s second-best. The Rockets finished on 90 points, 22 points ahead of second-placed Storm.
