A psychiatrist from a Harrogate hospital is celebrating after winning Consultant of the Year at a national awards ceremony.

The Cygnet Annual Psychiatrists Conference and National Awards 2024 recognise excellence in the healthcare industry.

Winner of the award, Dr Rebecca Lasseko, is a Consultant Psychiatrist at Cygnet Hospital Harrogate, a 36-bed hospital on Ripon Road which provides acute mental health inpatient care.

She was presented the award by Subulade Smith CBE, President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, who said:

Dr Lasseko was nominated for her effort and hard work which has led to an improved CQC rating at Cygnet Hospital Harrogate. Her strong work ethic, compassionate values and outstanding clinical skills are valued by all who work with her.

Dr Lasseko said:

I am still in awe of receiving the award of consultant Psychiatrist of year. Seeing my team celebrating in excitement and hearing my patients’ say ‘well done you deserve this’, it humbles me.

I could not have done this without my my team, wider community of psychiatrists in Cygnet Health Care and NHS, my patients’, my friends and family. I dedicate this award to them because they all deserve it. I am proud to be a doctor at Cygnet.

Harrogate opticians sponsor local netball team

Specsavers Harrogate has sponsored the local netball team, Harrogate Spartans, with a donation of over £1,000 for brand-new kits for the ladies' and junior teams.

Harrogate Spartans recently established its first-ever junior team to ensure young players could continue to enjoy the sport after their previous arrangements changed.

However, with no funding in place, the club relied on parents and volunteers.

Sara Smith, team manager of the Harrogate Spartans, said:

We can't thank Specsavers Harrogate enough for their generous support. Their sponsorship came at a time when we were working hard to set up our junior team and needed the extra help to give all our players, young and old, a fresh start.

The new dresses have made a huge difference, they have allowed us to create a new identity, allowing us to all feel united as a team, and confident on the courts – we’re proud to represent Specsavers Harrogate.

Caroline Sullivan, optometrist director at Specsavers Harrogate, said:

At Specsavers Harrogate, we value the work that local sports teams bring to our community, offering individuals an environment they can learn about team work, whilst being able to thrive and grow.
