Allerton Castle has announced that its American owner, Dr Gerald Arthur Rolph, has died.

The castle said in a statement Dr Rolph died peacefully on December 2 at the age of 92 in Florida.

Dr Rolph acquired the castle, near Knaresborough, in 1983 and spent a vast sum restoring it. He was awarded an OBE for his outstanding contributions to the preservation of heritage buildings.

Dr Rolph studied at Harvard Business School and became vice president of Tandy and RadioShack in the United States, where he made his fortune.

The statement said Dr Rolph’s “innovation and business acumen left an indelible mark on the technology sector” and his “legacy is one of integrity, dedication, and kindness”.

It added:

Dr Rolph will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the dedicated trustees of the Rolph Foundation, all of whom were profoundly touched by his remarkable life.

He is survived by his loving family, who carry forth his passion for service and commitment to excellence. A memorial service to honour his life will be announced shortly.

Rest in peace, Dr Rolph. Your light will forever shine in the lives you touched and the memories you leave behind.
