Plans to create a takeaway serving hatch at Bettys Harlow Carr have been given the go-ahead.
The application, submitted by Taylors of Harrogate in September, sought approval for a new serving hatch at the site on the outskirts of Harrogate, as well as a new awning and the removal of an existing hedge to facilitate the hatch.
The serving hatch will be positioned near the front door of the Harlow Carr tearoom and, according to Bettys, has been designed to reflect the existing doors and windows.
The hatch will also be painted in the same shade of green as the timber on the existing storefront.
Planning documents say the serving hatch, which will be covered by the awning to protect it from poor weather conditions, will allow customers to buy food and drinks ‘to go’ without the need to enter the Bettys building.
This would make service more efficient and prevent long queues inside, they add.

The proposed site plan at Bettys Harlow Carr
A council report said just one person objected to the plans and raised concerns over a potential increase in footfall.
The objector said nearby Crag Lane has “not been upgraded to accommodate increased visitors associated with RHS Harlow Carr and Bettys”, and felt there is an “insufficient provision of litter bins for takeaway items”.
Harrogate Town Council neither supported nor objected to the application.
But the council report said the proposal “will not harm” the appearance of the existing building, nor is it considered to increase noise, overlooking or overshadowing impacts.
It added:
Although the serving hatch may slightly alter customer flow, it is unlikely to materially increase visitor numbers or cause harm to neighbouring amenity. Concerns regarding litter are noted, however, there are existing bins within the RHS Harlow Carr grounds.
The council also said: "The proposed serving hatch is ancillary to an existing use and primarily intended to improve internal queuing and service efficiency rather than to attract new visitors".
The council approved the application today (November 4) subject to conditions.
