An application to extend a block of flats on the site of a former Harrogate social club has been denied.
North Yorkshire Council approved plans to demolish St George’s Sport and Social Club and build 14 flats in 2022.
The Stray Ferret reported in March this year that an application to increase in height and width of the building to allow for two dormers and balconies had been submitted.
It sought to extend the height of the building by 75 centimetres and the width by 1.5 metres.
The proposed extension
In a letter to applicants JG Developments, Martin Grainger, head of development management at North Yorkshire Council, said the local authority had rejected the proposal on visual grounds.
Mr Grainger said it “would have an unacceptable adverse impact on the amenity of surrounding residential properties through overbearing and overshadowing”.
He added the proposed dormers on the east of the building would have an “over-dominant" and harmful effect on the area.
